As the mother of four wonderful teenage boys Tsara spends a lot of time figuring out who she is so she can teach her sons to do the same. She also hears herself holler, "Stop Eating!" an awful lot! As her boys get older, she gets louder while sharing her beliefs and ideas. Again, as a way to comfortably ask them to do the same. Being the sister, daughter and mom of autism, much of what she has to say comes from what the challenges of living surrounded by so much difference taught her. Though her posts are rarely specifically about autism or parenting, they are always stories grown from the fertile and organic thinking soil that can be found where the two come together. Tsara is the author of the new book Spinning In Circles And Learning From Myself: A Collection of Stories that Slowly Grow Up.

Tsara Shelton is also a volunteer photo editor here on OEN. She had the honor of being interviewed on the Envision This! podcast, hosted by Burl Hall (a contributor to OEN) and his wife, Merry. The Baltimore Riots and The Incredible Hulk

I noticed two trending hashtags on Twitter today. #BaltimoreRiots and #NationalSuperHeroDay. Suddenly I thought of Dr. Bruce Banner and the struggle he has with The Hulk. It's kind of like Baltimore. Let me explain...

Let's Listen-Stepping Into The New Year

I've been guilty of it. Thinking "you don't get it" when someone tries to tell me what life is like being black, transgender, autistic and more. I'm none of those things, but I love people who are. Now, I listen. Listen with me.

The Brain Broad Builds A Brain: New Podcast Sheds Light On Mental Health
SHARE More Sharing
My mom (Lynette Louise) has a brand new podcast: The Brain Broad Builds A Brain. Inviting a different guest with a history of brain knowledge for every episode, they'll explore a brain dysfunction chosen at random. With creativity, brain science, and out of the box thinking they discuss what might be done to help that brain using all the tools in their toolbox, essentially sharing tools with the audience.

Sexy Daydreams (or My Life is Awesome)
SHARE More Sharing
There are entirely too few songs celebrating parenting and marriage--family life in general!--so I wrote one of my own. Here I am singing it in our living-room, where much of my life happens. And my life is awesome!

What he's given me and what I strive to give him

I'm getting older, and my kids are growing up. My son is about to turn nineteen, the same age I was the day he was born, and I've been thinking about the gift of him.

It Takes a (Texas) Village: Our story of Acceptance and Autism
SHARE More Sharing
My mom heads to Uganda on Saturday. She'll be working with six families daily, filming her reality series and eating grasshoppers! As an international autism expert my mom travels the globe often! As an author, speaker/performer and hands on therapist she has helped thousands of struggling families around the world. But only one has been there since the beginning. The first family she traveled the globe for. Ours!!

The Rape of my Son's Girlfriend: A Phone Number on an Index Card
SHARE More Sharing
April is both Autism Awareness month and Sexual Abuse Awareness month. Interestingly, these are the two themes that have most often offered lessons in my life. I have been trying to offer these same lessons to my son's girlfriend and it has been very emotional and educational for me. After writing this piece and sharing it with my son in order to get his permission to share it with you, his gratitude was palpable.

Co-Parenting with Marge Simpson

I am a very happy person. I have a habit of likeing pretty much every day and every moment with all my soul. Yet, strangely, my favorite songs are lyrically depressing, raw or sexually charged. Somehow I seem to sing and dance that side of me out. It got me thinking about cencorship and how so many parents won't let their kids listen to the same music that my boys and I love. This diary has nothing to do with music... its about cencorship... but it was concieved after too much coffee and listening to Pink's 'Sober'.

Look at those Guys, Mommy. They are so Black!
SHARE More Sharing
It's not very often that your child's innocent comment and a strangers challenging accusations come together to create a beautiful moment. But I remember one such time that, for my family, became just that. I suppose I could have made a different choice and been unhappy, uncomfortable and learned nothing. But, I'm proud to say, I didn't!

My Boys and their Beautiful Autism
SHARE More Sharing
I wrote this a few years ago for a website that gives hope to families of autism. Following in my mothers footsteps, I made it too long and it was never used. I want to share it because it examples how recognizing autism and getting to know it without fear and with a willingness to make choices based on observation rather than literature can lead to surprising results!

Prison Tour Parenting (By Lynette Louise)
SHARE More Sharing
I vividly remember this adventure my mom took us on! My oldest son was only a few weeks old when we embarked on this thrilling journey. Sharing with prisoners our music, comedy, inspiration and my chronically leaking breasts! Good times. The togetherness our family experienced is descibed beautifully at the close of this diary entry.
