Nora W. Coffey founded the Hysterectomy Educational Resources and Services Foundation (HERS) in 1982. HERS is an international non-profit organization that educates women about the lifelong functions of the female organs and the consequences of their removal, providing one-on-one counseling to more than 850,000 women throughout the last 25 years and information to millions of people worldwide. She has lectured widely, been a guest on most talk shows and news programs, has been interviewed in most major newspapers and magazines, and is the co-author of The H Word: what gynecology doesn't want you know about 100 years of hysterectomy and female castration in America, to be released by February '09.

The media sensation surrounding Sherry Johnston's self-medication with the pharmaceutical drug OxyContin "to deal with the pain" years after her hysterectomy seems to be incidental to her arrest. The fact that she was disabled by hysterectomy would hardly be noteworthy, if it were not for the fact that she is the "other" grandmother to Sarah Palin's grandson Levi.
