I spent many years as a police officer and am constantly depressed by the chasm that exists between the public and the police.
That gap, like the gap between citizens and government, cannot be closed by either side. It will take effort from both to repair the years of digging.
The police MUST publicly acknowledge mistakes; as well as openly and honestly seek criminal sanctions against officers who commit crimes. Entirely too much misconduct is solved, under the table, with a resignation.
Both the police and the public must accept that the other is completely human, subject to both mistakes and intentional wrong action. Neither has a claim to perfection.
