My website www.danielclavery.com contains a bio with my most recent writings including excerpts from my memoir, All the Difference, available on Amazon.com kindle and in paperback. The first seven chapters are available on my website in a "look inside" feature on the upper right. In my memoir I describe the experiences that changed my consciousness going from a pawn in the military to an advocate pressing for justice, truth, and human dignity. My writings capture my journey from a conservative Christian studying for the ministry, to an agnostic graduate from Annapolis, who navigated a jet and a ship, protested the Vietnam War, attended law school, and became an activist lawyer. I nearly lost my life many times, driving the story as I was resilient. From my experience in the Navy, I became a civil rights lawyer working Cesar Chavez and ACLU for justice, truth, and human dignity, married and raised a family fulfilling my dreams of making a positive contribution with my life. As a civil rights attorney I fought for those who were discriminated against, beaten by the police, wrongfully terminated by their employer, sexually harassed or defamed. I found my calling even though it was a path less traveled as a solo attorney in Los Angeles and now an author of a progressive memoir. After a career of as civil rights lawyer for thirty-four years, I wrote a memoir, some short stories and poetry after a series creative writing courses at local colleges taught by published professors and critiquing with writing groups. Some legal highlights:Successful appeal in Coriell v. Superior Court, 39 Cal App. 3d 487, 114 Cal Rptr. 310, which established the right in California to seek discovery prior to class certification. Successful appeal in Kelly V. General Telephone, 136 Cal App. 3d 278, 186 Cal Rptr. 184, which established the right of an employee to plead a case for slander and negligent infliction of emotional distress against an employer for a false statement contained in a personnel file without first conducting a reasonable investigation if the communication was motivated by malice. Published Law Review Article, "Conspiratorial Violence at Picket Lines: Actionable Under Section 1985(3) and Section 1981."
