If the Democrats deliver anything, we'll take it. Even if the Democrats do nothing at all for two years, we'll take it over the unimpeded Republican agenda. We're grateful that they replaced the Republicans.
But nobody is expecting statesmanship, patriotism or heroism from the Democrats. As is nicely delineated elsewhere, the Democrats are probably not the final answer, just a stopgap measure, a Band-Aid for now to stem the hemorrhaging. The republic remains poised on the edge of a precipice, now in the hands of Democrats that we don't fully trust even as far as to not deliberately push it over the brink themselves for a few bucks, let alone assume that they can and will rescue us.
We support the Democrats and we wish them well, but we should not trust them or rely on them. Contingency plans are needed.
If America cannot assemble and empower a bona fide liberal political machine that can win elections and govern according to established American principles, then it is dead and the meaning of the elections is merely that the timetable of America's transformation into a fascistic autocracy has been shifted a little, that we have bought a little time before this government begins oppressing the American people overtly.
If you have been paying attention, you should have thought about some kind of contingency plan for emigration by now even if emigration is presently your last option exercised only in the direst of circumstances. Could that happen? Somebody seems to be planning it:
There is talk or evidence of detention camps, private paramilitary forces under government contract, border walls, wire tapping and data mining of ordinary US citizens, new torture statutes, weakening of the Posse Comitatus statute, flouting of the Bill of Rights and Constitution, concentration of governmental power by the disabling of checks and balances, fraudulent voting, insider 911 complicity, Machiavellian politics and ethics, national ID's and more. Clearly, they are planning to do something to us, and right now you have only the Democrats to prevent whatever that is from coming to pass and to right the wrongs of the recent past. They may not be up to it, so yes, the direst of circumstances could reasonably be expected to come to pass. So what to do?
Two things, simultaneously and with dispatch: (1) vigorously begin building that alternative liberal political machine in earnest now just in case it is not too late to wrestle the government back from the corporatists; and (2) make real contingency plans to leave the country in case they don't, in case the Democrats betray or disappoint the nation.
That means having a concept of where to go to and what must be done to get there with whatever you can bring with you so that if it comes to pass that you do feel a need to get out that you don't have to risk your life, your freedom or losing your possessions to relocate.
