As the implosion of the Bush Economy has come into focus in recent days, finger pointing has become a high-level sport.
Blame for our looming fiscal crisis has been laid at the feet of greedy investors, clueless politicians, hapless regulators, even bamboozled home buyers. But syndicated columnist Froma Harrop says it's time the rest of us, the American masses, accept our share of the blame.
Harrop compares us to a convenience store owner who leaves the cash register open while he goes outside to take a smoke. Should we be surprised that bad guys came along and helped themselves to our cash? Nope.
It's about time, Harrop says, that Americans started paying attention. An article about "Maxed-Out Moms" in the current issue of Time magazine is not encouraging on that front. Maxed-Out Moms are described as white women between the ages of 45 and 64 with no college education, and some experts view them as the key to the upcoming presidential election.
Let's hope those experts are wrong because a recent poll shows Maxed-Out Moms favoring John McCain over Barack Obama by 18 percentage points.
Maybe we would be better off if these moms are too maxed-out to vote on election day.
