Six months ago tonight, I went to the Senate floor to speak out about Donald Trump's nominee for Attorney General -- Jeff Sessions.

Nobody wanted to talk about the fact that President Trump had nominated a man that both Democrats and Republicans had decided was too racist to become a federal judge in the 1980s. So I went to the Senate floor to read an old letter from Coretta Scott King. She knew about the way former US State Attorney for Alabama Jeff Sessions had intimidated and prosecuted civil rights workers for helping elderly black citizens to vote, and I wanted the Senate to hear what she'd had to say.

Mrs. King wrote of African-American families visited repeatedly by the FBI. Of people pressured to change their testimony. Of elderly black men and women herded onto buses and driven 180 miles to appear before a grand jury. She talked about fear and the toll it took on people. And she said that Sessions had "used the awesome power of his office to chill the free exercise of the vote by black citizens."

Every senator voting for Jeff Sessions and every person in America needed to hear that letter. When Mitch McConnell threw me out of the Senate for reading it, I was shocked. It wasn't just my voice that was being silenced. No, Coretta Scott King was silenced.

And just to be clear: Mitch McConnell wasn't the only person who tried to silence me that night. I appealed his decision, so the whole Senate got to vote. Every single Republican in the Senate chamber that night voted to censure me. Not one of them wanted to talk about why Jeff Sessions was a problem.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is a problem -- and I'm still talking about it:

  • He supported the Texas voter ID law -- the strictest voter ID in the country, meant to stop African Americans and Latinos from voting.

  • He reversed the Obama Administration directive to stop using predatory, for-profit private prisons.

  • He reinstated the failed "War on Drugs" with harsh mandatory minimum sentences for low-level, nonviolent drug offenses.

  • He rolled back investigations of police departments that commit civil rights violations.

  • He announced a probe on college admissions programs to twist and distort federal civil rights laws.

  • He promised to withhold federal funding to cities with immigration policies he doesn't like.

But here's the deal: When Mitch McConnell and every one of his Republican colleagues kicked me off the Senate floor that night, he didn't silence me, or Mrs. King, or anyone else. In fact, they made us louder. I went outside to the hallway, pulled out a phone, and read Mrs. King's letter online. Over the next few days, tens of millions of people heard -- or read-- Coretta Scott King's words.

I never expected anything that happened on the Senate floor that night. I never expected "Nevertheless, She Persisted" to become a meme, a t-shirt slogan, a tattoo, or a rallying cry for people all across this country who are tired of being told to sit down and shut up.

This fight isn't about me -- it's about all of us. This is our moment in history. Not the moment we wanted, but the moment we are called to. Donald Trump may call us names. Mitch McConnell might tell us to sit down and shut up. But we will not give up and go home.

We will resist. We will persist. And we will win.

Thanks for being a part of this.

Are you kidding me? This phony shed any credibility that she may have had once she became a surrogate for Hillary.

Warren is such an unhinged freak that she makes Mrs. Clinton look like Miss Congeniality. This raving nutcase isn't going to be able to sell anything to the majority of non-urban counties that voted for Trump in 2016.

The Democrat clown car is stuffed to the roof and putting the pedal to the metal towards the edge of the cliff.

She couldn't get elected as dogcatcher in a national contest.

Personally, I voted Green, so I can't get too exercised about Democrats who stuck with Hillary. It's scary to think about what could have happened if Hillary had won though.

There's already too many people out for revenge against Senator Warren and others. I mean supposing that we could destroy the Democratic Party - or maybe we have - that doesn't necessarily build the Green Party or the DSA. What's needed and has been needed for a long time is to elect Greens or Socialists to Congress. Not a single one in all these years, except Bernie - that's hardly a great score!

Is it really about Hillary or even Democrats? Isn't it really about tyranny and subversion?

Absolutely right! But people have a hard time separating the message from the messenger. For many of us, E. Warren lost a heap of progressive credibility during the campaign. And she does shriek a bit.

Her message is a decent one and she should continue putting the words out. But she's just not a leader anymore...in the eyes of many.

Funny! Tyranny and subversion? Yeah the democrats already voted it into place over 100 years ago when progressive liberal democrats voted to hand the keys of this country over to the banksters with the creation of the federal reserve act written in secret in May 1910 and voted into law just before Christmas of 1912 and nearly every democrat present voted FOR it while only a handful of Republicans voted for it.

So it was passed by democrat majority and signed into law by another progressive liberal democrat president Woodrow Wilson.

Yeah, the reason we suffer under tyranny today is all thanks to progressive liberal democrats 100 years ago.

And then to further solidify the banksters hold over this country and taking it to the world, another lily white yankee progressive liberal democrat firmly OWNED by the banksters of NY- another NY'r gave them the banksters global development company known as the United Nations of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, INC. AKA = NWO.

All voted on and passed iinto tyranny and subversion of this once great nation all thanks to progressive liberal democrats while today's party inheritors- more lily white mostly northern progressive liberal democrats have no clue.

Go figure!

We have. And it is precisely why today progressive liberal democrats are exiled in every way possible and non-progressives are taking THEIR country back.

Thanks democrats for voting this country over into the hands of banksters and globalist thieves! YOUR party is to blame for the mess we are in today!

Then there was AG Eric Holder, who promised to return the Justice Department to the American people as soon as Obama was "sworn into" office - but for nearly eight years he did not bring Bush to justice (e.g., "fraudulent justification for a war of aggression", war crimes, torture of human beings) and he did not #Investigate 911 (#TakeAction/#JoinTheCause) - #PrimaryInsideExplosives.

"No one is above the law, not even the president" - Barack Obama, but the Democrat never did fulfill his promises. The American people never did get #HealthCare "just like congress has" - #obstructionofjustice. #DebtFreeMoney.

Well, we've come a long way on the issues you identify, in terms of how the public thinks about them. As for Holder-Obama, I still think that we need to ask ourselves what might have ensued if the elections of 2010 had gone in a different direction.

What's needed and has been needed for a long time is to elect Greens or Socialists to Congress. Not a single one in all these years, except Bernie - that's hardly a great score!

When you attack the writer of the article, instead of considering the subject matter (in this case, the fact that Trump snuck yet another racist crony into the White House), you play directly into Trump's hands. It was easy for him to divide the Dems and Republicans because people didn't pay attention to the issues and bought his degradation of his opponents. Here, you sound like mini-Trumps attacking the establishment politician because she's from the establishment, not because of the substance of her argument. It will be easy for Trump to steal another four years if you keep thinking this way. If you want a legitimate progressive movement, talk about who your candidate should be, and why. Simply railing against the establishment won't produce the right candidate.

You're throwing pearls of wisdom before holier-than-thou swine, here, on that one.

Warren dropped the ball a few times before and during the last election. The fact that she's near-perfect on everything else is of no consequence to the Perfect Or Bust crowd.

It depends on how important those dropped balls really were. I think we should be glad people are waking up, watching the game and checking where the balls are landing.

Elizabeth Warren has a good message ...always has. (Obama screwed her) But one could argue that she has no imperative to back words with action right now (she's safe), as the Dems are impotent in this administration.

Re: Perfect or Bust. Sanders was far from perfect, esp. in foreign policy and war prep. The people knew that. So it's not Perfect or Bust. But it was a decent Lesser of Two Evils option.

Warren made a mistake that's hard to undo without rebuilding a ton of lost trust. Shrillness benched Kucinich and H. Dean. Warren needs to adjust her voice delivery, stop speaking like a kindergarten teacher rallying tiny children, and quit putting Party over People.

What you say misses the point... No matter how valid the message may be, you can't trust the message, if you can't trust the messenger.

That's not "playing into" anyone's "hands". It's simply demanding a better messenger.
