CAIRO - Canadians John Greyson and Dr.Tarek Loubani have been released from prison in Egypt Saturday evening, reports Huffington Post.
The Canadians were arrested during violent demonstrations in Cairo on August 16, their plight having roused the sympathies of thousands worldwide who petitioned the Egyptian government for their release.
"Lynne Yelich, the minister of state for Foreign Affairs issued a statement Saturday night saying Canada welcomes the decision to release Loubani and Greyson.
"I look forward to Dr. Loubani and Mr. Greyson being reunited with their families and friends, who have shown tremendous strength during this difficult time, the statement said." H.P.
According to Yelich, she and Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird had been in constant contact with Egyptian officials concerning the plight of the two Canadians, and that Canada's embassy in Egypt worked tirelessly to secure their release.
The Canadian men were able to convey to the outside world the abominable conditions inside the Cairo jail, leading to international outcry. A petition shared on social media garnered millions of signatures demanding their release.
