As with every other move the Bushites make, this need not be a problem. It can be a great opportunity.
The Democrats should respond to this propagandistic counter-attack with a challenge. Let’s put it to the test!
Under mottoes like, “Enough of this propaganda! Enough of these lies! Let’s let the truth reign again in America!” the Democrats should challenge the Bushites: “What we said is true and we’re willing to put ourselves on the line on this. Are you?
”Let’s have a trial of sorts about what we have asserted. And let’s take it out of partisan hands. Let’s call the best expert witnesses in the country (on international relations, on the history of the presidency, on Constitutional Law, or whatever is the relevant area or areas). And let’s have a jury of representative Americans decide the issue.”
[This can be done on such assertions as: The Iraq invasion is the greatest foreign policy disaster in American history. This Bushite presidency is the most lawless in American history. This president has been more dishonest in his statements to the American people than any president in American history. This president lied us into the war in Iraq. Etc. etc. ]
And the challenge can up the “put up or shut up” stakes even more. The Democrats can challenge their challengers: if we lose, we’ll retire from office and if you lose, you retire from office.
The Bushites will never take up these challenges. So one need not wonder just how it would work, or just how the juries would decide. But the “put up or shut up” challenge – let the truth be known—might indeed compel the Bushites to shut up. Or at least it would make their counter-attack much weaker in the battle for public opinion.
And the Democrats in Congress would always be able to hold hearings on the very propositions that they’ve asserted, and that have been attacked by the Bushites. With the increased public interest in the issue thus joined in the political arena, well-conducted and honest hearings on the issue under dispute might well get more public attention.
