Still, I have one major question for Bernie. What exactly does he think he's doing in a Democratic presidential primary? Why is he asking for the nomination of a party he always avoided joining?
Make no mistake, Mr. Sanders is not a Democrat. I don't believe that he's running for the nomination to become the leader of the Democratic Party as much as he's coopting the mechanism of the party to launch an effective third party run at the presidency. It's a misreading of his rhetoric to assume that he's attacking from the left. I believe Mr. Sanders is attempting to exploit a revolutionary moment in American history, attempting to draw upon a wider base of support than the Democratic left or the Republican right.
Some writers on this site and similar forums have suggested that Mr. Sanders has been right for his entire political career, and certainly he has held his beliefs for quite some time. Was he always right? In the nineties, his views were far from mainstream thought, but perhaps things have changed. The fact that a Sanders candidacy is even possible, much less garnering wide support, lends credence to the theory that times have changed. Perhaps Mr. Sanders is the candidate of this time.
Mr. Sanders has claimed that his election would require nothing short of a political revolution. He's right. The question that I'm pondering, is are we living in a revolutionary moment?
