On Saturday night last, Zuckerberg himself posted this on his own page:
"Of all the content on Facebook, more than 99% of what people see is authentic. Only a very small amount is fake news and hoaxes. Overall, this makes it extremely unlikely hoaxes changed the outcome of this election in one direction or the other. I am confident we can find ways for our community to tell us what content is most meaningful, but I believe we must be extremely cautious about becoming arbiters of truth ourselves. This includes continuously reviewing updates to make sure we are not exhibiting unconscious bias."
A New York Times report published earlier in the day cited conversations with current Facebook employees and stated that "The Trending Topics episode paralyzed Facebook's willingness to make any serious changes to its products that might compromise the perception of its objectivity."
Gizmodo and Mark Nunez said this: "Our sources echoed the same sentiment, with one saying Facebook had an 'internal culture of fear' following the Trending Topics episode.
Internal culture of fear? I really can't see it. Some bugs, some glitches, some things to correct? Clearly, yes, like start with making the rules for posting very clear, like how many how often is too much, and excoriate the bogus posters and continuously fake news sites. That would be a great start.
Zuckerberg not only has a spine, but his mind and global stature together clarifies that he is already one of the great geniuses of our era. Facebook helped Bernie Sanders advance his progressive agenda magnificently, despite clear and calculated efforts by the likes of the DNC, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Clinton campaign to denigrate it and tear it down.
In due course, it will be clear who the real winners and who the real losers are, but in the meantime, what little is left of our democracy needs to be defended and kept fresh with the bet of our strongest corrective efforts, which are already showing up vigorously on Facebook and at OpEdNews.
Someday, God willing, if they weary of pouring out the archaic bilge they wallow in, the editorial page editors of the newspapers of America (and there are many exceptions to this blanket castigation) might wake up to the truth as most of them were bamboozled all along by the DNC and the Clinton campaign to support a deeply flawed candidate.
Almost every important news story in the USA seems to show up on Facebook, and/or gets widely shared on Facebook once it is published, and for that, we should be thanking Zuckerberg and his Board of Directors and ignoring the so-called "conservative" criticism of this dynamic and integral part of progressive politics in America.
So to heck with The Financial Times freelancer Rebecca Rose saying: "I can't even ["deal"?] with this. Mark Zuckerberg is a goddamn spineless phony." I think she left one word out, and further, has got the whole thing hopelessly wrong....
