There's a history here that comes to mind. As the Wikipedia article indicates, the most famous instance of push-polling was conducted against Senator John McCain in South Carolina when McCain seemed possibly poised to defeat George W. Bush in the campaign for the Republican nomination for president in 2000: "Voters in South Carolina reportedly were asked 'Would you be more likely or less likely to vote for John McCain for president if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?'"

It also says in that article: "Push polling has been condemned by the American Association of Political Consultants."

It is the disreputability of such polling that explains what Wikipedia identifies as the biggest danger of employing such a campaign tactic: "[I]f credible evidence emerges that the polls were ordered by a campaign, it would do serious damage to that campaign."

So I would like to ask Heather Wilson if this push-poll to malign Patsy Madrid was paid for by her campaign, or if it was conducted by anyone else -such as the national Republican Party-- with her knowledge.
