What a catastrophe if this is true. What a disaster if the citizens of the world's greatest power --politically, militarily, economically, culturally-- are incapable of thinking clearly about large-scale and systematic realities. We, who are transforming the system of the earth's climate. We, who are despoiling our birthright of a system of government for free people. We who are undermining the system of international law.
What a peril to humankind if the sovereign people of such a mighty nation --a nation that, if its wisdom does not match its great power, will be a destructive bull in the china shop of many vital systems-- cannot grasp the reality of the systemic dimension, even though the health of such systems will govern the conditions under which our descendants will live.
And while these great systems are falling down around us, we sleep-- and only when a public man acts disgracefully in private do we wake up.
Can we Americans really be such children?
