The above parody is based on the American song, “Tavern in The Town,” published in 1883 by William H. Hill. Some of the original words are thought to have come from British coal miners in Cornwall. The song is regarded as “traditional” in both the United States and Great Britain. Sherwood Ross, author of the new words about President Bush, is a Miami-based journalist and folk musician. Five of his comedy numbers have been published on Smithsonian/Folkways Records.
