Just three days later, in Sarasota, Florida, (the place where 18,000 plus votes disappeared in 2006 from paperless touch screens, arguably causing a candidate to lose her Congressional race), citizen observer Jeannie Dean stood behind a glass window, outside a room where computer tabulating machines hummed as they were fed memory cards obtained from each computerized optical scanner as they came in from each precinct, supposedly an accurate representation of how each voter voted. No precinct totals were available and might not be for days, they were told. "How do they get the county totals when they don't have the precinct totals?" she wondered. She noted at one point officials scrambling when a tabulator had a problem, and officials pulled out their hand calculators and did a manual override, she believes. Of course it's hard to tell anything about what the actual numbers were, behind that thick glass window, with the machinery whirring, and the citizens being too far away to read anything.
