This is not some holier than thou tirade going on here. It is just when I do that, suddenly the discussion changes. Suddenly my mind is not focused on just my needs but I see how we are all in pain and we are all in need and that when we care enough about that other person, sometimes above our own needs, we feel free of the rage and fear that these times have instilled in us.

This is my survival tactic. So far it has helped me deal with the anxiety and rage and humiliation. It doesn’t take away those feelings; it just puts them into a different context so that for a time I feel much better. Not unlike how exercising can relieve stress, so does giving to others. I recommend it. It is the only antidote I have found for all the fascistic hatemongering going on around us. But each of you will find your way too because it is important that we each do what we can to change the focus our country has had for too long.

Since we can no longer afford to be consumers, let us be givers. In whatever way we can and with whatever gifts we have. We can turn away from that road rage and make a place for the guy who needs to be that arrogant son of a b*tch while at the same time preserving ourselves and our energies to do what this country really needs in order for it to continue to be a democratic country that seeks peace and justice for all.
