Erdogan's Hail Mary strategy consists of calling new elections due to AKP's failure to form a coalition government along with military action in Syria, which presumably would draw strong support to the existing AKP government, which ordered the military action. Through new elections plus a strong war bias toward the AKP, Erdogan assumes that he can get the majority he needs to avoid a coalition and the resulting investigations.
As of today, the military is refusing orders to attack Kurds, ISIL, and possibly the Syrian Arab Army. We have not heard the last word on what the military will do.
As for new elections, the AKP is paving the way to make them happen by creating serious obstacles to a coalition government. AKP insists that President Erdogan cannot be excluded from coalition talks even though his participation would be outside the political neutrality required of the president and each potential coalition partner wants the president investigated for corruption. Holding to this demand may be the excuse used to force new elections.
The main purpose of the Syrian action is to keep Erdogan in power so the president can keep himself, his family, and cronies out of jail. At this point, it's all about survival for the constitutionally elected president who wanted to become a sultan.
