Unemployment has more to do with economic instability caused by the boom-bust cycle that Wall Street feeds on than with immigration, legal or illegal. And even in good times, the Chamber of Commerce lobbies for policies that guarantee a large idle segment of the workforce in order to drive the price of labor lower. If immigration affects unemployment at all, it is primarily the lack of planning on the part of government to foster economic policy to manage the changes in the work force than the actual changes (due to immigration) themselves.
In Conclusion
In my view, the real problem of immmigration is the failure to maintain a change management system that would make the integration of those who want to come to America into the workforce easier. Of course, those who feel that immigration is bad for America will say that there should be no change to manage and that government is the problem, not the solution to the problem. So, choose sides and may the best ideology win.
