It is the division of living being, that identifies as male or female. More commonly sex is known for contact between man and woman for the purpose of carnal appetite. Persons after attaining puberty are attracted to opposite gender; desire emerges to have physical contact that relieves carnal craving is sexual love.
Interesting, sex is "division of living being" which then goes on to say sex is "known for contact between man and woman for the purpose of carnal appetite". These are two contrary notions. Sex as a noun, is indeed, divisive. Thus we are seen as either a woman or a man. This is our sex. Yet, sex is also integrative. When we feel the magnetic tug of the "other," we are being asked to unite which is then called, "having sex."
Sex is a dance of division and unity. It expresses the universe. As Lao Tzu realized, sex is universal process. Thus the Sun and Earth make love. From that lovemaking, plants, trees and human beings emerge from Her soils. This is also why Intelligence or Wisdom is often seen as Female, as illustrated in the name Sophia. Wisdom is simply That which conceives the universe. She is also that which conceives this article as writer and reader.
Sophia is the Process of Nature. She may be the Yin of the Universe, but She is also the driver of the Process. In creation myths, it is often the Female that generates Desire, Eros, who is often seen as Male. Thus, the Rig Veda states, "Desire came upon that one in the beginning, that was the first seed of Mind." Eros is thus the first born and is that which initiates the unfolding of all potentials contained within the Mother. Mind you, no woman is a Mother unless there is an "other." This is why "other" is embedded in the name. There has to be a separation, and in creation myths, in the beginning all is a non-differentiated unity which then divides into multiplicity. If there were no "Other," there would be no Mother. Just so, the eye cannot see itself unless it looks into a mirror. This is why Genesis 1:27 of the Bible states that God creates humanity in Her image, male and female.
Yet, Female and Male do not come into existence until there is the "other." This is why the most formal name for a woman who has given birth is "M-Other." If we remained united with Her (both as Nature and as child), She would have no sense of Herself, as reflected in the eyes of Her child. There simply is no self-awareness unless there is an "other." This is why we are born and have a "M-other."
Life thus is a big dance of self-discovery. All of this, the planets, deep space, the trees, seas and bumble bees are all about self-discovery. And the Self, Brahmin in Hindu and Yahweh in Judia-Christian lore, cannot known unless there is an other. The limitation of Infinity is that there is no Other. This is why She becomes a M-Other. And, this is., simply, the primary reason YOU are here. And this is how you are not an alien in an alien universe.
You play no small part in this dance.
