Robots have traditionally been bad at handling anything other than solid objects, but the robot named, "AR," is able to recognize clothes by their creases and actually pick them up, repeating the action should it drop them." ~ From Japan Probe

"During its introduction to the media on Friday, AR carried a cup and saucer on a tray from a table to the kitchen; collected washing and put it in the washing machine, and swept the floor, moving furniture where necessary. ~ from Japan Probe

Readybot

Silicon Valley engineers dreamed this up over a couple dozen cups of Starbucks coffee. This little guy not only can pick up after the kids and clean your kitchen floors--it also sends off a companion robot (the Roomba) to vacuum your carpeting before the company arrives.

ROMI

From South Korea comes ROMI. The gimmick here is this personal robot will clean all your other personal robots! Obviously a gift idea for the person who has everything.

Smart Pal V

Yet another Japanese company, the Yasukawa Electric Corporation, has introduced a household cleaning robot. They call this one the Smart Pal V. It has 3 fingers, 9 joints, and an ominous-looking eye slot.

Although it's designed to work safely in your home and do odd chores, the robot looks menacing. It might best be used as a threat to intruders. You could place a sign on your premises reading:

Warning: These premises protected by killer robot.

By 2020 personal robots are expected to become a half-trillion dollar industry. They probably will be, as long as they steer away from the design concept behind the Smart Pal V.
