The state should rise
Above our tormented minds.
Act, correctly,
With no chance to err.
It should not
I pray with you,
Defile us with acts
That we'd hate to take.
There is a flow of facts
Released by technology,
That shows over and over,
That the states have erred.
There is a history
Of Prosecutors, Like Wade,
Who put prosecution itself
Above Truth and Honesty.
The jury is a fine thing,
Perhaps the best we can do.
But, perfect it is not.
And I'm sure of that.
As the state acts,
It sets example for all.
And the child learns
When it sees things done.
Let us never set the stage
For the child to then be man
Who can say to us,
Explaining his acts:
I saw men raise the ire
Of the state, of us all.
And the state did this:
It killed those men.
There are, sometimes, men
Who have blackened souls.
And are not fit
To live with us.
So, let us be rid of them
From society.
But by exclusion,
Not extinguishment.
For errors will be made,
Juries will err.
DAs may dissemble,
Truth may lay hidden.
Systemic discrimination
Will show itself.
But only to scholars, yet to come,
Looking back, over the history.
So I praise my state,
And its governor.
For a choice taken
To which, I fully do agree.
Above our tormented minds.
