About the author: Born in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1928 he lived there till 1982 and witnessed firsthand the entire process of partitioning of India. He met Gandhi, shook hands with him, had a confrontation with him but soon fell in love with him. He supported the Gandhi-inspired Quit India movement but also supported the Muslim League demand of a separate homeland for Muslims within India, to be called Pakistan. His father, Allarakhia Abba, aka Alaya Seth, was a prominent member of the Muslim league. When he, in 1940, declined, on health grounds, to join Mohammed Ali Jinnah on a tour to gain support for the demand for Pakistan and to raise funds for an English daily Dawn, Jinnah personally requested him to do so. In spite of suffering from heart problems he agreed and accompanied Jinnah on the tour. He died from heart attack on the second day of the tour.
