My main concern, however, is for the personal safety of members of the press during major demonstrations. They should not be endangered by the misuse of crowd control devices. There has to be a way of developing policies that do not infringe upon the freedom of the press to do its job during these kinds of events. The duty of a journalist is to document and report on breaking news. Police crowd-control actions should not interfere with this vital community service.
