A closer look at the polls shows that he is simply not within striking distance of winning the nomination. His support has run into a wall: Women, blacks and Hispanics continue to support Mrs. Clinton by a wide margin, as do white moderate and conservative Democrats.
Mr. Sanders has become the favorite of one of the Democratic Party's most important factions: the overwhelmingly white, progressive left. These voters are plentiful in the well-educated, more secular enclaves where journalists roam. This voting support is enough for him to compete in Iowa; New Hampshire and elsewhere in New England; the Northwest; and many Western caucuses. I realize this is not going to make me terribly popular at OEN. But, as I said at the outset, I still believe his candidacy is absolutely essential if there is to be the kind of real change in this country we all hope for. The Senator is doing a magnificent job of giving a voice to tens of million Americans, and forcing the media to carry a point of view they never would have under any other circumstance. Bernie, is very, very important, and we need to continue to support him.
I think we just have to be realistic, and try to stay that much ahead of the curve...
