This cannot be boiled down to either some intellectual discussion or a fall back on a romanticized fictionalization of the independent American cowboy. It’s not something intellectual, and the romanticized cowboy never existed. Most, the first chance they had ran to the cities for more dependable employment in environments that were more comfortable. One, enabling someone who works hard to have a decent standard of living for themselves and their family is just plain morally right. Two, facilitating a vibrant middle class is essential to civil society. Deny enough someones the legitimate perception they might be able to secure a place and a stake in civil society and you guarantee that incivility, lawlessness will run like a plague over the land. It’s also about self-preservation. You can bet your life on it. And the lives of your children and grandchildren too.
