An abundance of cheap electricity could make a tax on electricity based of vehicle registration palatable. The best part of this program would be that unlike the TVA the federal government wouldn't sell this valuable resource back to private industry but instead would create a national energy cooperative and would sell the electricity slightly above the cost to generate it. Electricity is a necessary commodity for an industrial society it is like water and some people want to ration it to keep the price more profitable.

So you can easily understand that cheap electricity would make a lot of people nervous. It would greatly impact corporate profits; CEO's would be in an uproar and stockholders would be upset. Fox News would have up to the minute reports of skies falling in various parts of the country. The media would be loaded to the gunwales with so called experts warning of our impending doom. But they are the same voices that scream whenever the corporations don't get their way.

But on the other side of the coin we can't go on this way. It is no longer a question of what we want to do it's a question what we of must do. We can't keep on shipping boatloads of borrowed cash to the Middle East; we can't keep fighting wars to protect our source of oil. We must rebuild our economy and we cannot let the unemployed millions founder. This is what FDR called building from the bottom up. The TVA solved the problem of flooding, it solved the problem of navigation and it solved the problem of unemployment and when it was done we had created a national asset that added to the national wealth all in a single stroke that didn't cost it paid!

A new truly green electrical grid will help solve the problem of the national debt, toxic emissions and global warming. It will put people to work and infuse money into the general economy. It will take place all over the country from Minnesota to Texas and from Florida to California. Just as the TVA changed the Tennessee Valley and made great cities rise from hamlets the same would be true here as well.

What stops us is a political system that is no longer working on behalf of the American people. An electorate that is divvied up between corporate populations. What this country needs is a new FDR instead of a silky smooth, smiley faced, corporate pitchman. They are too self centered and profit driven to understand that what FDR did it ten years carried the American economy for next twenty-five years. Only the remorseless hammers of Republicans aided by Democratic allies destroyed what FDR put in place.

Our times make it obvious that we must relearn those lessons and build again. If our government can't or won't, we must relegate them where ever the gaslight and buckboard companies reside these days. It can't wait.

The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.

- Winston Churchill

I who am I? Born at the pinnacle of American prosperity to parents raised during the last great depression. I was the youngest child of the youngest children born almost between the generations and that in fact clouds and obscures who it is that (more...)
