"At the same time, Gogoi turned a complete blind eye to the events in Jammu & Kashmir where hundreds of political leaders had been imprisoned, without charge for months and the SC did not even deem fit to hear the numerous cases of habeas corpus, filed since August 5, 2019 when the government abrogated the special status of the state of J&K," Varsha Singh of Scroll pointed out.
Varsha Singh added: "Gogoi did seem to live up to their expectations as in the last few weeks of his tenure, he took over numerous cases, many of them crucial for the government, and declared that he would render judgment in these matters before he hung his boots. There were at least half a dozen cases which were decided in a matter of days, even if some had been pending for years, if not decades."
MP Mahua Moitra's Monday speech against judiciary was just a fresh reminder of the biased higher judiciary. Tellingly on January 12, the Supreme Court appointed a three-member committee to defuse the farmers agitation that continues in the capital New Delhi since November 24 against the three laws farmers say are against their interest.
However, all the farmer leaders have rejected the committee which they said are composed of people who support the controversial farmers' laws. Appointment of the three supporters of the controversial farm laws to the committee is self-evident of the pro-government attitude of the Supreme Court and Mahua Moitra's statement should be seen in this perspective.
