CAIR describes it a partial victory
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, described the scaled-back Muslim Ban 2.0 as a partial victory. In a statement the CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said: "While this is a major political defeat for the Trump administration -- we cannot now be complacent. We must continue to fight this discriminatory and unconstitutional executive action." He went on to say:
"As White House Adviser Steven Miller promised, this watered-down 'Muslim Ban 2.0' was retooled to achieve the same unconstitutional policy outcome as the first deeply-flawed order. We believe this desired policy outcome is in fulfillment of now-President Trump's campaign pledge to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. This order stills stigmatizes the faith of Islam and Muslim. It does not make America any safer, but does make America LESS great."
The American- Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, in a press release said: "The administration's attempt to tailor the order so it conforms to court rulings does not take away from the fact that this is still and Arab and Muslim Ban. The new order is the same in nature as the old one. It prevents admission for nationals from six countries, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Further, the order puts a complete ban on refugees entering the U.S.
The ADC also said: "This ban is not about national security; in fact the Department of Homeland Security issued a report indicating that the ban does not make America any safer. The ban is about xenophobia and Islamophobia. The new ban will have the same effect on our community as the initial one did, and ADC will continue to provide pro bono legal assistance to those impacted. Further, we will make ourselves readily available to come out to your city and provide sessions about the ban and its impact."
Khalil Meek, Executive Director, Muslim Legal Fund of America, in an email said: "We continue to be troubled by this administration's ongoing attempts to single out Muslims for adverse actions. Such blatant discrimination is a violation of our nation's constitutional freedoms of speech, expression and religion. It is our freedoms that make American great, and it is our diversity that makes America strong.
Gold Star Father Khizr Khan Cannot Leave America
Alarmingly, the Daily Kos reported Monday that Pakistani-origin US citizen Khizr Khan has had to cancel a speaking engagement in Canada this week because his travel "privileges" are being "reviewed" by the US Government. Khizr Khan has been a US citizen for 30 years. His family made the ultimate sacrifice for America when his son, Army Captain Humayun Khan, was killed in service in Iraq.
The Daily Kos writer said: "This administration can put all the lipstick it wants on the "travel ban" pig but it was and is always intended to be a Muslim ban."
