When we consider the role of sports and the rise of its dominance in high school and even junior high/middle school, where local television stations are making sports “stars” out of 12- and 13-year olds, what does that leave for those who do not play sports?  Why should they slave away over text books and homework when some jock gets to be a celebrity?

Even when I was going to school, it was somewhat that way, referring to sports.  One of the changes I feel needs to be made is to completely de-emphasize sports in all educational institutions, regardless of how much money they “bring into the system.”  When you really examine it, the money they bring in is normally poured back into the sports departments anyway, so it adds nothing at all to the education of students beyond athletics.

Every so often we hear the same tune played on different instruments, whether by left or right or center, about reforming education.  And it is always, in the end, a plan to make it more complicated and confusing.

Why isn’t it time we recognize that education is something that is elemental and basic, and concentrate on that?   Certainly, what we’ve been doing for the past 40 years isn’t working.

Wouldn’t you think intelligent people would understand the need to change?
