While Rome is going to be the center of attention for the upcoming Conclave that will seat a new pope following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, In June, Israelis will elect a new Ashkenazi chief rabbi. Just as Catholics look to The Pope for religious and spiritual direction and moral clarity in an ever evolving world, Jews in Israel and some around the world rely on Israel's chief rabbi to also offer direction and clarity, but they are also too often disappointed. For the past ten years now, the Ashkenazi chief rabbi has been Rabbi Yona Metzger, who has held firm against the modern Orthodox and the non-Orthodox Jewish streams. That alone is fracturing the country as resentment grows over laws and rules no one but the religious right can live with comfortably. |
