The world has been down this path before. We know just how deep and perilous this breakdown could be before we ultimately break through. But we also know just how resilient the human spirit is — there is only so far it can be pushed before it pushes back. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor, but it must be demanded by the oppressed.” The question now isn’t about “if” we are going to fight for our freedoms but “when.”
We are in the midst of a non-violent civil war. We must decide what we are willing to do to not only save ourselves, but the future of our democracy. Unlike Butler’s novel, we can’t simply flip to the end and see what happens. Instead we should look to Parable as a road map that shows us that the Trump regime only wins if we allow inertia to set in and continue waiting for a savior.
