Republican strategist Steve Schmidt, who held high-level positions working for George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and the 2008 presidential campaign of John McCain, has had enough of the GOP. Schmidt is an MSNBC commentator and has long been critical of President Trump, but the White House directive to separate children from parents at the southern border was the last straw. Schmidt explained his decision in a series of tweets, one of which read: “29 years and nine months ago I registered to vote and became a member of The Republican Party which was founded in 1854 to oppose slavery and stand for the dignity of human life. Today I renounce my membership in the Republican Party. It is fully the party of Trump.”
