A politician who swears off PACs can stand on the side of the people without compromise. Such a candidate, with a good team, has a higher likelihood to make good on promises: ending the inequity of underfunded public schools, finally giving single mothers a break with day care, taking on an oppressive economic system that hurts people across ethnic and cultural backgrounds — crippling people with debt and often limiting educational opportunities.
The endless proliferation of weapons and the destruction of our planet are linked both in ideology and in actuality. As we poison our earth, we fail to see ourselves as part of the planet’s ecosystems. Other democracies that do not infuse money into war, become leaders on issues like international human rights and climate change. Though not perfect, The European Union and Costa Rica are examples.
