“A bus driver talks to a lot of voters in a day, often more than a police officer or a fighter or a teacher,” Costa said.

In March 2016, the ATU issued a relatively late but important endorsement for Sanders, citing “his long standing fidelity to the issues that are so important to working people are what convinced us that standing with Bernie is standing with the 99% of America that has been left out of the mainstream public debate, cheated out of our jobs and denied the true meaning of the American dream.”

The prospect of a second Trump term in the White House proved too troubling to the union for them to wager on Sanders.

“We appreciate Sen. Sanders,” Costa said. “We don’t want to say anything bad about him. But this is about beating Trump and our members believe Joe is the best one to do it.”

I wish the Politico article had interviewed the union members to ask them why they think Biden is more likely to beat Trump. It apparently isn't because they would not vote for Sanders, so is it because they know people who would vote for Biden but not Sanders, or what?

One might want to look at Mr. Costa's recent financial gains.

I imagine it can/has been done, but not by people with no knowledge or resources with which to do so.

My point is IMHO the union members had little say in the endorsement as is typically the case in large groups where the "leaders" speak for all and there is usually a pay off of some sort.

Something stinks here. Corporate toady Biden could never beat Trump and Bernie could. Who is pushing the phony narrative to the union members?

I don't know. That is a great question. Certainly someone rich and powerful.

You can bet there was a barrage of social media stuff targeting individual union members. The agencies that do that stuff are deplorable but effective.

We can and should venerate Bernie. By me, he can have any high position when dividing the spoils of victory over trump pence and Putin. Recognizing the gravity of this particular election Requires setting aside personal ambition and even identity affirmation and Seeking to draft a Democrat who is a popular virtues hero like Tom Hanks, Or Kevin Costner or George Clooney. . This election is about who we are as a people. What are our values, Lying exaggerating money and vict'ry anyway OrTruth honor and Justice? Draft an embodiment!!

What you are saying is absurd. Movie stars? What you apparently fail to comprehend is that Bernie has earned and will get the nomination.

The timing of this is absurd. Why would they decide just before Iowa that Biden is more electable than Sanders???

More likely: They caved in to political pressure to switch their support to Biden, and that would be much more apparent if they waited until after the primary and Sanders won.

This is yet another profile in cowardice. Sanders deserved the endorsement both because he is the most electable, but also because he has championed organized Labor all of his life.

One other OEN author is looking into precisely why they did this, and will also go into the timing. It may not be as nefarious as you hypothesize; in fact, in 2016 the same union was very late in the endorsement calendar. Maybe they are trying something different? Maybe they are procrastinators (in the context of the Iowa Caucuses)?

I called their office, 301-431-7100, and you can leave a message for their president, John Costa. It's too late now for the Iowa primary but maybe we can send him information that shows Bernie polls better than Biden against Trump because he said the reason for the endorsement was because he thought or the members thought Biden had a better chance to beat Trump. Anyone have poll numbers that show this?

There are dozens of Iowa polls that show that.

Great. well done: so glad you called. It will make a good subsequent article, no matter what he or the rest of them say!

I hope you are taking my suggestions about Utah seriously. Here is the USNPL.com Utah list:

https://www.usnpl.com/search/state?state=UT

I also have used this one: https://www.50states.com/news/utah.htm

I know it is a small state in terms of delegates, but a vital one for big statistics, and how great would it also be for you single-handedly to influence the LDS to quietly support him for the nomination?
