The Economist Democracy Index   rates countries   on the state of their governing system each year. In the latest installment published today, 22 countries in the world were rated as “full democracies,” including all Scandinavian countries, several Western European nations as well as Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Mauritius, Costa Rica and Chile, which joined the top group in 2019 together with France and Portugal.

The US was listed as a 'flawed democracy', downgraded because of low 'political participation' and dysfunctional government.

Remember that this is The Economist, a British weekly that adopts a business perspective, and considers none of the alternative news sources that you and I might rely on. In particular, they do not consider

  • votes are tallied by machines under corporate control, using secret software
  • our most progressive leaders have been assassinated by our own government
  • both parties are determined to keep socialists, progressives, and even peace advocates out of contention
  • our media have been consolidated into a handful of companies, all with ties to the US government and corporate interests

They rank Cuba and China as totalitarian, their lowest rating, and yet governments in Cuba and China are more representative of the will of their people than the US government.

Yep! Universal Human Rights exist everywhere but DONALD TRUMP's land.

It takes a real brave fearless leader to extradite Julian Assange. American refugees can't get asylum in English speaking countries. Is that great or what? You have the right to leave (and return). You have the right to not be tortured, but not in DONALD TRUMP's land.
