Muscogee author, Eddie Chuculate has been awarded a 2013-14 Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Wisconsin Institute annually offers seven year-long fellowships, in various disciplines. Three fiction, two poetry , one playwriting and one in fiction or poetry for a graduate of the University's own MFA program. Chuculate is this year's Carol Houck Smith Fiction Fellow.
Chuculate is the author of the acclaimed short story collection: "Cheyenne Madonna" and the winner of a 2007 Pen/O. Henry award for his short story "Galveston Bay, 1826." He has a creative writing degree from the Institute of American Indian Arts, has held a Wallace Stegner Fellowship in creative writing (fiction) at Stanford University and received an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa . His work has appeared in Manoa, Ploughshares, the Iowa Review, Blue Mesa Review and The Kenyon Review.
Starting in 1986, the Wisconsin Institute has offered fellowships to artists working on their first book of poetry or fiction. Beginning this year they have opened up the fellowships to authors who have published only one book of creative writing, in addition to those who are unpublished. Each fellowship comes with a $27,000 stipend, health benefits and a creative writing teaching assignment.
