Here's a flash: It's not about you, Sarah Palin!   It's about twenty people senselessly gunned down in Tucson, Arizona, six of whom died; it's about the loss of a nine-year-old girl and a Federal judge and the others; it's about the severe wounding of an admirable Congresswoman; it's about the marvelous heroism which occurred; it's about the overwhelming community outpouring, both of grief and of support; it's about the national response, including a moving and most meaningful speech by our President; it's about issues such as mental health screening and even gun control.   But, it's not about Sarah!

Somehow, though, it is not surprising that you would rush to take the low road in your canned remarks on the tragedy in Tucson.   After a brief mealy-mouthed expression of regret, you went into a song and dance about how wronged you were to be criticized for escalating the rhetoric of hate shortly before that tragedy, which you claim had nothing to do with the event because the deranged shooter was "not political."   Then, your statement went into your usual Charlie Brown act, if you recall the song of that name which ended each stanza with: Why's everybody always pickin' on me?   You blamed much of the media and your opponents for something which you called "blood libel."  While you obviously have no idea of the history and meaning of that term, your speechwriters do.

I only wish my maternal grandmother Regina Leo were alive today, as she could instruct you about blood libel, an abominable false centuries-old tale that Jews use the blood of Christian children to bake matzah and in other rituals.   My grandmother was sent to America by her aristocratic Goldsobel family in Warsaw to escape a possible pogrom in Poland such as those then taking place in Russia late in the Nineteenth Century.   The Czar of All the Russias had decreed his "pogrom program" to eliminate some three million Russian Jews: re-locate a third, convert a third to Christianity, and kill the others. The "blood libel" falsehood was used to inflame the Russians. When the Holocaust occurred, Grandma Leo was not surprised, commenting that history does, sadly, repeat.

Now, Sarah Palin, you misuse "blood libel" to apply to your being criticized for encouraging gun violence in general and the Tucson tragedy in particular. But your very disclaimer proves the point, as you once again escalate the hateful rhetoric shamefully.
