Israel denies plan to nuke Iran - was it a leak, a plant or a hoax?

The UK's Sunday Times report of an Israeli plan to nuke Iranian targets was flatly denied by Israel. This leaves the question of whether the "Israeli sources" who leaked the story had designs to paint Israel badly, intimidate Iran or spur debate. It is plausible the leak was meant to instigate tensions between Iran and Israel as Bush continues to push for US military intervention in Iran, against the wishes of US citizens.
