On this somber anniversary we must all ask ourselves. Is our foreign policy just? Is it effective at reducing the threat from terrorism?

I believe the answer to both questions is 'no'.

The answer is not more soldiers. We need to understand how cycles of violence work. Violence almost never permanently reduces violence. Instead, violence invariably produces the death and maiming of people who have nothing to do with the quarrel, including children. Violence can suppress violence for a while, but in the end the 'war to end all wars' always produces a bigger war.

There are dangerous people out there. We need to bring them to justice. Some of them are in the Middle East, some of them are in Washington D.C. (no, it's not just Republicans). They all threaten our security. Our challenge is to apprehend them and try them without creating more victims. There are already far too many victims.
