Questions, Quirky Quarks Quase Earth-Quashing Quakes of Fears Over LHC Atom-smasher

The LHC (Large Hadron Collider) or the world’s largest atom-smasher to us non-scientific folk is set to go off in August.

Perhaps “set off” is a bad choice of words since many fear the ring of super-cooled magnets, which are 17 miles in circumference, attached to huge barrel-shaped detectors, and buried 330 feet underground, straddling the French/Swiss border, could possibly cause major earthquakes, other natural disasters and -- in the worst case scenario -- create a self-induced Earth black hole that will suck us up.

That kind of sucks, doesn’t it?

Their fears may be for naught, since the LHC start-up is scheduled for August 2008, and not May 5, 2010 or December 12, 2012, dates predicted by Nostradamus and the Mayans as end times, or more precisely the end of the world as we know it.

But then, if that should occur, maybe next time they won’t ignore this paraphrased warning set forth in an ancient margarine commercial: Don’t mess with Mother Nature! You never know what will piss her off.
