Here is the latest from AlJazeerza News on the warfare between al Sadr's Mahdi army and the Coalition-backed Iraqi government. This seems to be a deliberate campaign against Moqtada al Sadr, not responses to "criminal gangs", and American Special Forces units are now said to be fighting alongside Prime Minister Maliki's units (see http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSL30612974).
