The AP is reporting that Republican chameleon Mitt Romney has terminated the contract for the landscaping service he employs to manicure his suburban Boston estate because they employ illegal aliens.
In the AP article, Romney's campaign spokesperson insists that the governor has been on the road campaigning and hadn't interacted with the workers on his front lawn.
Perhaps Romney and all Republicans (and Democrats, for that matter) would be a little better off if they started interacting with workers instead of prostituting themselves to rich corporate and special interests.
The hypocrisy seeping from the immigration debate is debilitating. I have repeatedly announced my opposition to immigration "reform" because the problem is not more laws, but enforcing the laws already on the books.
The crux of my arguments against immigration reform are nicely summarized in this latest Romney flip-flop: for years employers have served as a pull-factor to attract illegal aliens to the US to essentially exploit at the expense of paying American workers a decent, livable wage.
Both sides on the immigration issue are wrong: Republicans "reformed" the law back in 1986, basically selling out to business interests, and liberals are pleading for the rights of non-citizens over and above the rights, and interests, of American citizens.
Correcting the immigration "problem" does not seem to be in the near future: both sides are too polarized, and frankly too immature, to do what is right for the American people.
