First full disclosure. I did a small amount of work for Nina Trasoff when she ran for Arizona Corporation Commission several years ago. -Bill

According to Councilwoman Trasoff's website here are a few of her accomplishments on environmental issues:

  • Protecting the Environment

I helped create a “sustainability frame work,” so that water, urban planning and transportation policies will all be developed with the environment in mind.

  • Solar Power: I created an ordinance and received unanimous support from my colleagues to mandate every new home built in Tucson must be stubbed out for solar hot water and solar electricity.  This will make it SO much easier for people to retrofit their homes to take advantage of the sun.
  • Rainwater Harvesting: We have also mandated plumbing for use of gray water for irrigation and are requiring rainwater harvesting on all new commercial development.  In a desert environment, it only makes sense to make good use of the rainwater that we do receive, in a smart way.
  • Wash Protection: The vast majority of desert wildlife makes its home in the washes and rivers. I helped win approval of the Wash Environmental Resource Zone. It protects natural water flow through the area washes in a way that protects wildlife and also prevents flooding.  I’ve also worked hard with my colleagues to improve Tucson’s habitat conservation plan.
  • Protecting Tumamoc Hill: Working with Councilwomen Uhlich and Romero, one of Tucson’s most-cherished natural treasures, Tumamoc Hill is now forever protected. Mayor and Council this year mandated that the City would live up to its obligations concerning an old landfill on the site so the county could buy the property with 2004 open space bond money. The long battle to protect Tumamoc has finally been won.
  • Plastic Bag Recycling: We worked for months with industry groups for grocers and retailers and developed a cooperative plan that requires all major stores to recycle plastic bags, educate the community about the importance of recycling them, and making it easy for them to recycle.
  • Go Green! For three years, our office has hosted Go Green!, a community environmental resources fair … one place where you can learn everything you need from composting to alternative fuel vehicles to the importance of using CFLs instead of incandescent light bulbs.
  • Expanded Bus Service: At long last, bus service is extending to our City limits!  New SunExpress service now reaches to Houghton Road every morning and evening, encouraging workers to leave their cars in the lot and ride the bus.  It’s a great, relaxing ride!
