I'm sure it's far greater today. But, for every CEO that makes this much more than the average worker, his or her company could afford to keep or hire 500 employees.
So, what then is the real cause of the current job crisis?
The Right has been telling us for decades that one of the main justifications for dynamic captalism is job creation. But I imagine we would hear from them a "righteous" howl if informed that the best way to achieve such goal was for the top 1% ever to take any kind of pay cut (which in and of itself gets to the real heart of our economic system-greed and selfishness).
But, the fact of the matter is: if 10,000 of these CEOs (does anyone have the actual number of how many of them are out there?) took just a temporary cut, and made only what their average worker makes, we'd save/create 5,000,000 good jobs.
The Constitution says nothing about our current brand of capitalism (and there are an infinite variety to choose from). We're only led to believe that "freedom" implies letting business owners do whatever they wish to the other 99% of our countrymen and women. In fact, the whole issue of "wage slavery" was hotly debated during the 1st Continental Congress. And, as Chomsky has pointed out, our "business model" is "totalitarian from the top down". Which strikes me as an odd way to run a democracy.
Anyway, that's my Sunday morning rant.
Thank you, and have a nice day...
