After November's election, the people were feeling optimistic, having elected a Democratic majority in the House and more than an even balance in the Senate. Speaker Pelosi announced her "first 100 hours" strategy and we were ready to watch the reform take place. However, the euphoria was short-lived as the House passed first one "non-binding resolution" only to have it squelched by the Republican bloc in the Senate. The Democrats, unlike the Dixie Chicks, are still convinced that they need to make nice. Perhaps they were in the minority for too long and it was simply easier to fall back into the same old habits of huddling helplessness. In addition, the next election campaign is on everybody's minds and key figures are playing to the power structure rather than to the electorate.
Now they trying to put together a plan to force the President to withdraw our troops from Iraq by one method if not another. However, the President dares them to "bring it on" with a threat of veto while the Republican Senators again threaten to filibuster. The Right shouts and threatens while the left huddle in a closet and plot like a family that is totally cowed by a domestic abuser and the public stand outside shouting, "Do something even if it's wrong!" It is of the utmost urgency that Bush and the Neo-Con agenda be stopped before their takover is complete and our beloved democracy is turned into the totalitarian corporatocracy which they envision. The groundwork for their evil empire has already been laid with the authorizantion for declaration of martial law which has already passed.
So every plan that is created runs up against the threat of filibuster. Let them talk! Debate cloture and then let them spout their hate hour after hour, day and night, show it on television so the people can hear every word! Let us hear every last word of their boring and falacious talking points over and over until we are sick of them and even the semi-conscious "sheeple" realize that they are nothing but parrots speaking the lines that were written in the White House. Otherwise, we will hear no original thinking nor will we hear any proposals that amount to anything other than a continuation of the blank check which was presented to Mr. Bush by the last Congress and that got us into this mess in the first place.
By the time the Republicans are suffering extreme laryngitis, papers of impeachment can be prepared, first for Mr. Cheney for the illegal outing of Valerie Plame and for meddling beyond his responsibilities in our foreign affairs, and then for Mr. Bush for usurpation of the powers of Congress and the Courts, for his war crimes, and for the devastation he has brought upon our economy by the squandering of our national treasure on the over-blown contracts with business cronies. It would be an even greater crime to allow these people to escape unscathed after being responsible for sending American men to die on foreign soil for a lie to enable their dreams of empire. Even if the Senate cannot be expected to convict, the filing of a bill of impeachment in the House would keep them busy, conferring with attorneys and trying to fend off their own personal disaster. It worked with Clinton, didn't it? Put a good, aggressive special prosecutor on it to find the evidence. Fitzgerald will soon be at liberty and he already has a load of information on White House operations.
Before the election John Conyers and others were collecting signatures in favor of impeachment and seemed ready to lead the charge in that direction but, as soon as the Democratic majority were seated in the house, that was "off the table" Suddenly, the Democrats were back in the old pattern of "coalition and compromise", playing by the old rules, and seeking the easy way out. If the last election and the polls don't prove anything else, Congress should get the message. To borrow an expression from the black-and-white boxing movies of my childhood. "Hit 'im ya bum! Ya got da wind wit' ya!"
The author is a very "with-it" old lady who aspires to bring a bit of truth, justice, and commom sense to a nation that has lost touch with its humanity in the search for societal "perfection".
I'm surprised Mary, that you'd even think this is possible. I cannot for the life of me, understand why intelligent sophistcated people absolutely refuse to accept as fact, despite the huge body of data, factual and evidential, that this social control paradigm is dead. Stone cold, graveyard dead. YOU HAVE NO ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES. You above most should know this. When one examines the history of this country from about 1750 onwards, emphasis on 1787, to this day, the US is a degenerate land of terrorists. Committed genocide against the natives, has murdered millions, perhaps even a billion in covert operations and idiotic wars like the current debacle. The people have only one choice now, and no one seems to have the spine for it. That would be either peacefully, or by force, including deadly force, require the Bush people to surrender to custody, and after putting together an interim government, dispose and dispatch the current system. It is necrotic now. Necrosis takes time, so we know this isn't new. It absolutely does not work. The republican party needs to be outlawed given IT'S sordid history, and the democrats need to be disbanded in favor of a party with the strength and courage to take the necessary steps to prepare a new day for this country. The UN could be called on to secure the US from people who would take advantage of this insecure time, and the ICC could have Bush and his crew. But, if you think writing to congress or such is going to move anything, then you aren't close to the sophistcate i've thought.

I agree with you. And to Mary Pitt, I'd say that the real
peril, and the real "doing nothing," is to continue believing that the very institutions (Congress, the media, the two big parties, the courts) that led us into this mess, can possibly lead us out of it. Trusting them or looking to them for help is futile, because they are set up to protect elite interests, which conflict with the interests of all of the rest of us.
There is no such thing as "holding the Dems' feet to the fire," or anything like that. The whole party only exists to make ordinary citizens believe they have some potential "say" in the system -- but they don't. This is because the Dems are programmed to smile pleasantly and nod understandingly, right before they turn around and betray you. This of course is much different than Republicans, who aren't obliged to even smile before scr*wing you.

Wrong again! I'm jusr a hick country girl who has lived long enough to know right from wrong and am trying to do the former and fight the latter. When I was five years old, I was not a bit above swiping candy and "sparklies" but I learned better. Sure, we were wrong in what we did to the native Americans and the blacks, but now we know better. We should also know better than to bury our heads in the sand and let the professional politicians steal our democracy from us.
You have the attitude that it's too late and all is lost, short of a bloody revolution. I prefer to continue trying to wake people to the necessity of the type of action that our Constitution provides for us. Doing otherwise is like the old hound dog who sat on his butt and whined because he was too lazy to get up off the porcupine. Our problem is caused by an ignorant populace who will sit on their behinds and let the politicians make all the decisions and whine when they find themselves the victims of a policy with which they disagree.
How about you stop being so negative and help me move them over?

Ted, you are right on as usual. We do not have a government and barely any representatives that represent the good of the people.
What we do have in the White House is a puppet, a sadist, and a liar and under them a bunch of self serving, lying bunch of thieves who only care about having their pockets filled.
The illegal president (aka the puppet) has it all set up to declare martial law..You are a vet so I'm asking you how would we handle that?
I may be 71 and a great great granny but I'm so sick of this particular bunch I'd be glad to join in bringing our country back to where we thought it was...what we'd like it to be at least.
I think we've been in deep doo doo since 1520 and the queen decided to take over this country with agressive action and for the same reasons the corrupt wealthy elite are after every asset on the globe..pure and simple greed.
What people aren't getting is that slavery wasn't just perpetrated on the blacks. It's been all the 'common' people. They just began making it obvious with the black people. All along it has always been all of the common people. They did then what they are still doing, only now on a larger scale. They are dividing us still with gender, hate, discrimination, religion, homophobia etc etc...just every way they can think of. I think the closest we've ever come to anything that resembled good was during the JFK years and even that was quite flawed but better than anything since.
I'm fed up with global genocide and assassinations of good people. Generations being killed off, horribly wounded, brain damaged just to make the wealthy even more so and futhering their goal of global asset control and a global government with what ever of the people left standing, as their slaves (aka workforce).
What will it take to ignite the fire that it's going to take to rid our country of the vermin that has infested it?
What will it take to unite the people in that common cause and bring it from talk to action?

Dear Mary, Until we can fix our corporate media and regain our 4th Estate (if we ever had it), our politicians will continue to run scared of offending the powers that be and with good reason, they control the polititcal "high ground", the media. Also with the Senator from Israel, Joe Leiberman threatening to jump ship if Demos draft an anti-war bill, there is little Demos can do short of a successful recall, or become a minority party in the Senate.

Many Americans have the government they need, want & deserve
As I see it, one major problem is that there are still way too many ignorant, brainwashed, morally incompetent "Americans", who, despite everything that's happened in the last 6 years, really don't see much of a problem with their government.
And needless to say, these idiots have exactly the government that they need, want, and deserve.
In fact I personally know plenty of people who still support Bush 100%. It wouldn't matter to these people if Bush started throwing babies out of Air Force One, for example, he would still get their unqualified support.
The people getting a raw deal are the hapless victims in other countries, and the maybe 1 or 2% of the people in the U.S. that truly appreciate and suffer the horror of the situation we're in.

This Justice department shall have access to all Federal and UN documents whether or not they are classified or sealed. Its first duty shall be to remove from office anyone that has or may have connections to the Zionist Terrorists that currently control the Federal Government. Since this time, President Kennedy who did not support the Zionists was assassinated. Since this time, President Nixon who did not support the Zionists was forced to resign. Since this time, President Clinton had an exposed sexual affair. How many secrets were obtained from the President and other high government officials as a result of this affair? How many Zionists are plying their trade with elected and appointed members of the United States government?
Why did the United States allow Arafat to be held prisoner on his own land, by the Zionists? Why did the United States stop the Jenin Massacre and other Massacres committed by the Zionists from being investigated? How many people are buried in the Zionist Enemies cemeteries?

Do we have factories and reserves left in the United States to produce what is needed for our defense?
When Al Gore was running for President, he had a Palestine Person on his staff to advise him about Palestine and the Zionist complained. Did the Zionist want to provide Al with biased or false information about the Palestine people?
Tom Friedman of the New York Times stated on the Charlie Rose show that the Palestine People cannot be allowed to return to their Land, their Homes, and their Livelihood because the land claimed by the Zionist would soon become a non-Jewish state. Does Tom not know that this land belongs to the Palestine people? Was he against the right of return of people to Germany least it not remain an Aryan state? Is he suggesting that there be a Jewish state and that all other states be non-Jewish? Is this the reason that the Zionists are proposing the division of Iraq into three parts?
While our Secretary of State Colin Powell was in the Middle East in an effort to make peace between the Zionist Terrorists and the Palestine people, Congress voted NO to President GW Bush’s efforts for peace and YES to the Zionist Terrorists continued violations of International law, violations of United Nations resolutions, and the inhuman treatment of the Palestine people. Since this time it appears that our President does whatever the Zionists want. How can members of Congress refer to these Terrorists as their friend Israel?
The Zionist wanted a war to be fought with Iraq. Did they destroy the World Trade Center Buildings to accomplish this goal? Why did the 911 commission leave everything about connections to the Zionists out of the report? Why was Zacarias Moussaoui not allowed to tell the American people why we are hated by some people? Would it have reflected badly on the Zionist Terrorists? Why are people in Europe who disagree with the way history is written by the Zionist Terrorists put in prison? Is the purpose of Political Correctness in the United States intended to restrict what we can say and what we can read on the Internet? Why did Congress rush forward and vote, “YES!” war with Iraq is necessary, when the inspections to determine the claimed justification for the war had not been completed. After 3 Years of war, Congress created the Baker-Hamilton commission to determine the best course of action for the continuing war in Iraq. Congress said that this was to provide the President with a way out of the War when in effect it was probably intended to allow Congress to wash its hands of their rush to war and to crucify the President for not turning Iraq into an easy takeover target by the Zionist with their nuclear bombs and United States supplied missiles. Some of the people on this commission were the same people who knowingly left information critical of the Zionist Terrorists out of the 911 report. Congress acts as if war can be turned on and off like a light switch! Any member of Congress that voted for this War or the destruction of Lebanon should do the United States a favor and resign. The Zionists also want Wars with Iran and Syria, which is probably why President GW Bush refuses to talk to the Iranians and the Syrians.
After Ehud Olmert, the Prime Minister of the Zionists visited the President in the White House; did it just happened, or did they plan that two Zionists soldiers were to be captured by Hezbollah. This was then used to destroy Lebanon infrastructure. Much of this infrastructure was paid for by the United States Tax Payers. Our President refused to make them stop and even rushed more weapons of death to the Zionists. Congress even went out of its way to vote YES to the Zionist destruction of Lebanon and NO to the people of Lebanon and NO to the people of the United States who wanted it stopped. Why wasn’t there an outcry in the United States Media about this destruction of Lebanon and its coastline? Why wasn’t there an outcry in the United States Media and Congress about the use of cluster bombs against Lebanon Women and children? Why didn’t the media tell about the International Laws and United Nations resolutions that the Zionists are violating on a daily basis? Is it because the Zionists control the Media and Congress and they present the best interests of the Zionists instead of the best interests of the United States? Were the Zionists responsible for the actions that led to Syria withdrawing from Lebanon so that the Zionists could more easily destroy it?
Do the Zionist Terrorists proclaim loudly “Never Again” and then whisper to themselves “Unless it is I”?
Who are the cowards and terrorists? Those in high flying airplanes with proper uniforms and using precision guided cluster bombs which kill women and children or the Freedom Fighters who can not afford a uniform, but who sacrifice their lives trying to get the land, homes, and livelihood of their people back?
Is the real purpose of these wars, to destabilize the countries of the world so they will become easier targets for a Zionist Terrorist takeover?
Why are people in the United States allowed to give money to the Zionists who use the money to Bulldoze down the homes of Palestine people and build illegal Zionist settlements on Palestine land?
Why does Congress continue to give money to the Zionists, when Congress knows that the Zionists have unregulated nuclear bombs, which makes this funding illegal? Why hasn’t the Justice Department put a stop to this?
Why did our government provide missiles to the Zionists for use in delivering their nuclear bombs? If this is not a violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty, it should be.
Why are immigrant citizens, [which, who] may not be looking out for the best interests of the United States allowed to hold high offices in our government and be secret advisors to the President? Examples of this are Henry Kissinger and Madeline Albright. Is our [Primary] educational system so bad that we need foreign born and/or dual citizens to run our government? All these offices should be filled by Legal United States Citizens born of Legal United States Citizens, Educated in the United States, and have never been dual citizens.
In order to solve the problems of the Arab people, they need to consider what Muhammad would think, what Muhammad would say, and what Muhammad would do. They then need to meet, work out their differences, and speak with one voice to bring about the rule of Law and Justice in the Middle East. As a united people they can then demand and enforce the rules of law, that all other peoples in the Middle East abide by International Law, United Nations Resolutions, and that everyone be treated humanely.
When the United States became a Zionist republic, we were a Creditor Nation, now we are a Debtor Nation and may be teetering on the verge of bankruptcy. Congress has given the Zionists over a trillion dollars with little or no accountability, yet Congress claims there is no money for health care for its legal citizens. Congress claims there is not enough money for Social Security for its legal citizens. Congress claims there is not enough money to secure our borders. Why are BILLIONS available annually to support violators of International Law, United Nation Resolutions, and Human Rights, but money is not available to meet the needs of the Legal Citizens of the United States?
It is time to turn all taxing power over to the states and allow them to decide how much of the collected revenue will be allotted to the Federal Government and the conditions for its expenditure. It makes more sense for the States to collect the money and allocate it to the Federal Government then for the Federal Government to collect the money skim some off the top and give the remainder back to the states with restrictions and strict conditions of accountability.
It is time to only allow a consensus of the Individual States to commit the United States to war.
It is time to save the Jews and the rest of the world from the Zionist Terrorists, the same as the Germans and the rest of the world were saved from the Nazi Terrorists.
It is time for the United States to stop being a Zionist Republic and a Big Bully for the Zionist Terrorists and return to being an American Republic with American Values which other people can follow by their own freewill if they so choose.
That is quite a "comment"! But reading it is about like reading a letter from my friend, to whom I will refer as Cal. Cal is convinced that our coddling of Israel and their treatment of the indigenous people of the territory which they were granted after WWII is directly responsible for our current problems in the Middle East.
