The Rising Tide of Popular Discontent in America

by Kyle Pominville     Page 1 of 1 page(s)

Tell A Friend

I have noticed something recently, both around the "water cooler" at work and creeping into the public discourse.

I keep hearing the same sentiment expressed in conversations between ordinary Americans: "things in this country are only going to continue getting worse until we have an armed insurrection."

And it isn't just progressives and liberals. I have heard some conservatives say the same thing.
Everyone is thinking the same thing; Are we headed toward another civil war?

A woman recently asked Michael Moore about this on Hardball.

"UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Hi, Michael, my name is Becka Baker. I‘m from Tulsa, Oklahoma. My question for you is with 71 percent of the American people dissatisfied with this country today, dissatisfied with the war, health care, education, that the sky is blue, you name it, they‘re dissatisfied. Do you think America is ripe for a revolt? Will a revolution put this nation back on track?"

Also recently, Hugo Award winning Author Orson Scott Card wrote "Empire", a fiction about a near-future revolution in the United States between liberals and conservatives.

This thought is on every one's mind, because there are no practical solutions being offered. The corporate control of our government seems total and immovable without violent overthrow. The conservative world-view that government cannot do anything right and that only private, for-profit enterprises can do anything for America infects our media and therefore infects a great many Americans, to the detriment of all Americans. We are being polarized into classes again and the media is keeping everyone ignorant to that fact.

That is what John Edwards is talking about when he talks about "Two Americas". My brother delivered a truckload of relief supplies to the Gulf Coast after Katrina and afterwards he told me that "those people needed those supplied desperately... before Katrina had ever hit."

There is a new book, "Richistan", that talks about how the wealthy live in a completely isolated world of their own. They send their kids to private schools and use private hospitals. Executives have private parking spaces and private entrances in most of the largest corporations. They live in gated communities and use personal assistants to do their shopping.

The corporate media keeps telling us that the economy is doing great, but their only evidence for that is that corporate profits have been going up.
At the same time, for average workers, real wages have been falling and our benefits have been drying up right before our eyes. We are watching our neighbors and families going bankrupt and losing their homes because of medical costs, outsourcing of jobs or because they were patriotic enough to go over and serve in Iraq.

Protests have not worked.
Writing letters has not worked.
Calling our Representatives has not worked.
They just caved-in AGAIN and gave into Bush on his warrentless wiretapping.

And the rightwing is thinking about it too. They are waiting and watching for the straw that breaks the camels back.

After Supreme Court Justice Roberts collapsed this week, rightwing radio host Michael "Savage" Wiener claimed that it was because of a "conspiracy by Democrats".

This country is headed straight for another civil war.

The signs are right under all our noses.

A Democratic victory in 2008 will only prolong the inevitable unless something radical happens and a real progressive populist is not elected. That will only happen if enough concerned Americans get together and take back the Democratic party.

A Republican victory in 2008 will only guarantee that the next American civil war happens sooner rather than later.

Civil war works for me!

This country is set up all wrong. There should not be a United States of America. The way I see it is that there should be at least four countries in this space. The south has always been one mind set. The East and West coasts should be separate countries and the middle of the country should go their own way. One of the reasons that there is not a consensus of opinions is that each of these sections is so different. The south seems to be stuck in post  Civil War. Even the speech patterns are deplorable. One would think that with country-wide tv and other media, the Southern accent would have disappeared.  But noooo! They seem to be proud of their accents.

In any case there would be a better chance to control what happens in smaller countries. What has happenened here is deplorable. I used to think it couldn't happen here but too many people were asleep at the switch.

Wake up America. Our country has been stolen by crooks!

Seeing, we do not see...

Far be it from one such as I to assign nefarious motives to any fellow American at this critical moment in our collective destiny; no, let me humbly suggest that the author of this piece has missed the underlying issue. This is not a battle between “liberals”, “conservatives”, ethnic groups, Christian, non-Christian, or any other of the numerous segments of American society; though for certain the powers that be would love us to continue in such ‘divide and conquer’ pseudo intellectual mindsets, thereby facilitating our total enslavement. Rather, this is a battle between those who would surrender the sovereignty of the United States to the New World Order’s one world government, and the rest of America. The author need only review the stated policy goals of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission, and then reflect on the fact that all the civilian and military leaders of our government are members of these groups, to ascertain the truth of this contention.

Indeed, had the true power brokers had their way in the nineties, the Second Amendment would have been gutted and we would already be slaves. The day is too far spent for us to continue to fight the ‘straw men’ of “liberal” or “conservative”; we must stand together as Americans to save our Republic, or be chained together as slaves. Remember: “He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty, he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself.” Thomas Paine

I disagree with Bayardtom

this country was not "set up" wrong....the founding fathers knew what they were doing..they just couldn't see into the future..they didn't have any idea about a stacked Supreme Court taking the peoples "choice" away from them in an election...didn't count on our votes being put into the hands of private companies....didn't count on a President running amok with power, a rubber stamp Congress or now, a chicke-s**t Congress..didn't count on our rights being taken away from us...with help from that same rubber stamp or chicken-s**t Congress...didn't count on the peoples right to impeach, being hampered by a chicken-s**t Congress.....and they certainly didn't count on a bunch of crooked, partisan, power-hungry politicians who think the Constitution of the United States is just toilet paper..they never intended for us to be corporate slaves..we had a Democratic Republic..now thanks to BushCo and the U.S. Congress we have a government, owned and run by corporations, including our daily "news" programs..and that my friend is what we used to call fascism, or communism when that form of government was in Italy, Germany or Russia...

Civil War?

I hope it won't come to armed insurrection.  Even the filtered news coming from Iraq shows civil wars to be very "untidy".  However, as the author points out, what other options are available for Americans to seek redress?  Our Founding Fathers carefully crafted all those checks and balances specifically to stop an Executive like W.  His Unitary Executive theory has OPENLY challenged Constitutional protections that once were considered to be undebateable.  Fresh evidence of repression appeared yesterday on the blogs (but probably not in the MSM), in the form of a photo showing storm-trooper clad FBI types raiding the home of a former federal prosecutor.  They were seeking evidence that could prove he was the culprit (hero!) who leaked the warrantless wiretapping "program".  Were it not so chillingly REAL, it could have been a scene from the Marx Bros. movie, "Duck Soup".  What to do about warrantless wiretapping and searches?  Arrest those who leaked the evidence as a lesson for other dissidents!  All said, a very effective demonstration.  Contributors on this and other blogs need to know that Big Brother is watching.

The ballot box is no help.  It's obvious that bushies will stop at nothing to maintain and increase their hold on power.  This is why the WH is so desperate to cover up the US Attorney purge.  Exit polls don't match up with official tallies?  The only explanation must be that the polls are unreliable.  (Never mind that this discrepency was the very same one the US used to declare the elections in Ukraine and Georgia invalid.)  The MSM approves and disseminates this nonsense through what appears to be willful collusion.  No help there from the First Amendment.

The Alternative Reality Cowboys are riding roughshod over our Constitution and have set the tone for the future.  The Libby pardon proves they will not allow Congress to interfere in their plans.  The only card that could still be played, with a chance of success is impeachment.  And not necessarily a sussessful one; but, a public one.  Only the light of day can drive away this evil threat.  Put bushie apologists on record.  Otherwise, the degree of bitterness between left and right will only increase; and, (God forbid) rebellion may be seen as the only recourse left. Impeach now!

2004 Elections = Enlightment

Civil War. I can't wait. I moved to Richmond right after the 2004 elections. I knew that America had become 1984 Orwell. I knew the best chances for change were in The South. To reignite The Rebellion. What I didn't know was... I'm related to John Bell Hood of The first Civil War and that the first Civil War was about State Rights...NOT Slavery. Oh how The Fascist Federalists love to change History. How's that for fate? I was born in Ohio... my Grandmother said to me ONCE.."you are related to a famous Civil War officer"...

I'm ready.

I also think we're long overdue for a revolution and am ready for the call to arms. I suspect it will be when the firefight begins between the IRS and Ed and Elaine Brown. For me, that will be the call to arms and I'm packed and ready to go.

Latest eavesdropping

More and more wiretapping,  yet another infringement on our rights by the gov't.  Add it to the ever-growing list of violations:
They violate the 1st Amendment by opening mail, caging demonstrators and banning books like "America Deceived" from Amazon.
They violate the 2nd Amendment by confiscating guns during Katrina.
They violate the 4th Amendment  by conducting warrant-less wiretaps.
They violate the 5th and 6th Amendment by suspending habeas corpus.
They violate the 8th Amendment by torturing.
They violate the entire Constitution by starting 2 illegal wars based on lies and on behalf of a foriegn gov't.
Support Dr. Ron Paul or load your guns.

We have a nonviolent alternative

I must disagree with your view that "there are no practical solutions being offered." Many of us that share your views on how bad things are building Friends of the Article V Convention at www.foavc.org, so that we can get what we have a constitutional right to have - the nation's first Article V convention to propose constitutional amendments. Our Founders anticipated that Americans could some day lose faith in the federal government, and that's why they gave us the Article V convention option. Help us make Congress give us the first convention!

Day of Dissent

Our Constitutional Republic has been destroyed. The foundation of American Liberty has been distorted, erased or forgotten. Our entire planet is ruled by an oligarchy of bankers, oil men and global corporations. We the People find ourselves intoxicated by an economic system that by design, undermines the prosperity, development and growth of the Worlds Citizenry. Rediscover Patriotism. Resurrect Dissent. The time has come to ascend upon Washington and RESTORE THE REPUBLIC! Seek Truth, Ask Questions...

Economic Democracy

Well, "Ron Paul" might be a close guess. HA!! At least he promises to abolish the Federal Reserve, and that is certainly a step in the right direction. But it's only a beginning.

We don't need a new leader. We need to utilize what little remains of "American" democracy to regionalize the economy away from corporate power. It has been said that "political democracy is hollow without economic democracy". It's also been suggested that "he who makes [prints] the money, makes the rules". Among other "cooperative" models, Economic Democracy suggests the regionalization of currencies in the interests of "fair trade" versus "free trade".

There are lots of "cooperative" ideas that already work well in other parts of the world. But typical "Americans" can't even "cooperate" to protect their own water supplies from corporate takeover (HA!!), let alone "cooperate" to "secede from the union" -- a mandatory prerequisite for the "Civil War" that someone keeps ranting about here.

Good lord. Get serious. The changes that must be made will come about non-violently, or they will not come at all. With all the "liberty and justice" that "Americans" enjoy, we could just as easily provide a "revolutionary" example for the rest of the world to emulate:

"Wow! Look at the United States, everybody! Now THAT's how to overthrow corporate imperialism!"

But we don't.  Let's face it, we can't all be as innovative as China, right? Instead, most "Americans" will be led placidly over the cliff before the rest of the "conservative" sheep ever catch on. But then, of course, it's too late. Might as well finish your nails, "America", as you plummet towards the rocks below. "Civil War", indeed. HA!! Get a grip.

Correct observation... wrong conclusions.

Upon reading this article, I can't help but to think I'm on the other end of the looking glass, where nothing makes any sense, and all the giant bugs are smoking something.

What the author seems to have missed is, oh, upwards of 70 years (or more) of Liberals, who lean increasingly Socialist, working their way into almost every facet of UN-ELECTED positions in government and society: academia, the judiciary, virtually every government bureaucracy imaginable. Call ANY phone number listed for any Federal department, chances are you're talking to a Liberal. THEY ARE ALREADY RUNNING THINGS, AND HAVE FOR YEARS.

Why are people so discontent? In my mind, it's not that George Bush is a raving conservative. If there's anyone paying any attention at all, you'll realize VERY quickly that "conservative" is a word that simply can't apply to a man in favor of wide-open borders with corrupt foreign nations, in favor of increasing government's role in our daily lives through increasing social programs, and a man who even pays lip service to "global warming" nonsense (real data proves you wrong - the real enemy is pollution, mainly from CHINA, not this phantom "warming" that really isn't happening). But I digress. The main point: the words "Bush" and "Conservative" only meet in the Liberal upside-down analysis of things.

We can simply dismiss President Bush as someone who is wildly INCOMPOTENT. That word can apply to him from whatever side of the isle you sit on, though we'll disagree on the reasons.

The reason people are so disaffected is very simple: EVERY MEMBER OF GOVERNMENT IS SINGING THE SAME TUNE. Listen during the debates, read the news, listen to them speak. Regardless of party, every politician, bureaucrat, department spokesperson, wants to expand government, and limit your voice in that government. A Democrat is a Republican is a Socialist, and there's no longer any real distinction.

The only thing that amazes me is what we seem to be fighting over now. Two sides fight over who can be more or less Socialist... nobody is saying we should NOT EMBRACE SOCIALISM AT ALL! It's a war of the Far Left vs. the Extreme and Dangerous Far Left.

This is a war we can't ever win, because the result will mean a loss of freedom, a loss of prosperity, and inevitably, like all Communist and Socialist systems, a loss of human life. No matter which side wins, humanity loses.

I would love to believe an armed civil war isn't inevitable, but as history shows us, when Leftists are upset about something, they will always take up arms and force their opinions on their neighbors.

Unfortunate it's only the other side who has the REAL gripe.

Reply: Conservatism had it's chance

Blaming George W. Bush alone for everything that has happened over the last 6 years is like blaming Ronald McDonald because the hamburgers are bad for you.

The Conservatives have had total control of America for 6 years.

They had the Executive, Legislative and Judicial Branches under their partisan thumbs and this is what it has brought us. Endless war, a reduction of our civil liberties and an expansion of the power held by the Executive Branch to levels we have not seen since King George III, all enabled and encouraged by the conservtives in America.

This idea that George W. Bush is not conservative is just an excuse by conservatives to try and avoid responsibility for their own failures.
George W. Bush is only one man and he was voted into that position by conservatives.
  TWICE!!!

The conservative idea that taxes are all a "burden" to be done away with is precisely the mindset that has allowed our infrastructure to become neglected and start collapsing and exploding all around us.

In just the last few weeks alone we have had steam pipes exploding in Manhatten, Natural Gas tanks exploding in Texas, Bridges collapsing in Minnesota and California and this is just the beginning! Out of the 6000 bridges in America, we have many more that received a worse structral rating and carry more traffic then the bridge that collapsed in Minnesota.

We need Progressive leadership again, like that which built America into the greatest nation on Earth in the beginning and middle of the 20th century.

We the People need to invest in America again, instead of "privatizing" America and selling it all off to wealthy individuals.

Taxes are the cost of living in civilized society.

We Ain't done with Democrats yet

The Progressive movement IS taking over the Democrat party. We just ain't done yet. I think a lot of this talk of, "Democrats are not delivering! We need to swing the pendulum the other way again now!", is premature. We underestimate the passive aggressive party, and one good sweep of the government in 2006 obviously was only a beginning of a solution. There is a beltway we need to sweep out of that party and mark my words it will get done. The Democrats will be our bitches when we are done with them.
