Denial is the Great Enabler

“Denial can be so thick” someone once said to me. It’s so true. No wonder so many mainstream Americans (not Opednews bloggers) remain silent concerning so many things, from civil liberties violations to 9-11 pre-planning to martial law to god knows what else. And no wonder, given the scenarios below, so many activists face ridicule and are scapegoated.

The analogy of the cyclatron comes to mind. Built with lead walls fourteen inches thick, nuclear atoms are bounced off those thick lead walls for days at a time or even longer. What would it take to finally melt all those thick and heavy walls down? How much heat can the cyclatron take before it too begins to melt like candle wax?

The answer is: A LOT!

Such is the case with human denial. Those thick walls we build up from within, to shield our psyche. Yes, the key word here is “Shield”. From what? Emotional pain. Information which, once acknowledged as real, would turn our whole world upside-down, shock our psyches, embitter us to the world, change our sense of self and of reality over-all, alter our coping mechanisms, and who knows what else.

No wonder we build such thick walls, psychologically. Reality threatens to knock down our walls all the time, just like the atoms bouncing off the cyclatron. The mental tricks we as human beings come up with are endless, to prevent pain from shattering our psychological bubble:

Psychology recognizes “Patient identification” as a known subconscious trick, in which a perpetrator labels his/her victim as “The Problem” instead of looking in the mirror. People who have grown up in abusive homes themselves, when shamed excessively for the most minor mistakes, simply can’t bear to think that they, too, are capable of wrong-doing. The world at large becomes the object of blame, rather than face the pain of awareness that yes, we ourselves are human and flawed. Or, god forbid, that we ever did anything wrong. That truth simply is too painful for some shame-based people to accept. Thus, the victim is wronged twice: First, by the violation, then by being blamed for it. The end result lacks all logic: The perpetrator Is Right and the victim is “framed” as The Perpetrator.

How logical, then, is the human mechanism of denial? Yet we activists will be confronted by it, all the time.

Then there’s the good old mental game of projection. Politicians are so admirably talented at seeing themselves in others: Labeling “the other side” (such as 9-11 truth activists) as “terrorists” is only one example. What a brilliant self-description uttered by the politicians, eh? They discuss the horrors of the Holy Jihadists while themselves waging shock and awe against a nation which never attacked us. They think they are seeing the world at large for what it is, but in truth are seeing a stunningly accurate reflection of their own selves. And they are fully convinced of the truth of what they see in the world, and of every word they utter. Doubt it? Just watch them and decide for yourself what you think.

And what about blowing off the searing truths? The more the truth hurts, the more we humans need to rationalize it somehow, to prevent it from penetrating our conscious awareness. Example: An activist discussing 9-11 pre-planning or pending enforcement of martial law is labeled “paranoid” and a “conspiracy theorist”. Some people may even snicker. Anything a person can do to spare themselves the anguish of reality’s searing pains, they will do. Of course, it’s not conscious. Even the accuser is not aware of his/her own pain, such as when acknowledging that Bush and Cheney are murderers on the loose, capable of heinous things like pre-planning 9-11. Thus, “The Kook” becomes the excuse for the denier to rigorously protect himself/herself from the dawning of truth. The facts will no longer bear any relevance to the denier: Instead, “The Kook” will dominate their mental frame of reference. Period.

No wonder we activists have such a hard time. We feel hopeless to “get through” to these people. We may misperceive them as being of ill intent, lacking in good hearts that care. How far this is from the real truth, at least in most cases. If we can compassionately understand that these people are suffering emotional pain, the irony is that not only will we feel better, but our activism will take a much more effective turn. We will soften our judgments and therefore our manner. Our presentations become more convincing and sensitive at the same time. The sensitivity, in turn, only lends us credibility. We are much less likely to become emotionally heated and lose effectiveness. The cause itself is more likely to flourish, given this compassionate attitude.

Knowledge is power: The psyche will find any number of techniques to protect itself from information which it is not yet ready to process. Thus, it becomes evident that our role as activists is *not always* to provide the real and convincing facts in order to recruit “the other side” to our aid. Truthfully, the more accurate the realities, the more likely the denier is to reject that information. Either they will ridicule us, laugh outright, rationalize and twist the truths, or somehow find any other way to do the obvious: Hide their heads under the covers.

I believe we as activists must learn to respect the needs of the psyche. Those who are emotionally equipped to deal with harsh reality, will listen and probably learn, responding rationally and objectively when given the evidence and facts. Those who are not emotionally ready to receive the information, will simply not respond to our truths. In fact, they will only recoil and rebel. The more we try to make them see it our way, the more evidence we lay out on the table, the more they will twist and wiggle their way out of seeing reality in its true proportion. And the more we push the truth, the more we will turn them off to it. It’s just like a salesman harping in your face: It’s called, by experienced salespeople, very bad technique. The only way to win people over is to respect their boundaries, as signaled by the heated responses which, in sub-text, are really trying to tell us: “Back off! I am not ready to deal with this!”

“Father forgive them, for they know not what they do” is a good mantra for those of us who (like me, and I will confess it quite honestly) struggle with anger at the rest of the world for their lack of participation in the solution and, seemingly, their lack of caring about all the heinous crimes that are going on. I am finding it helpful to remind myself:

“Denial can be so thick” as to lead alcoholics to drink themselves to their graves. Talk about rationalizing as a tool of denial: The alcoholic suffers the illusion of control. After all, s/he can stay away from booze for months at a time…but ultimately, they also go back to it, losing house and home, friends, family and jobs in the process. If they end up on the street, “Denial can be so thick” as to whisper into their brain: “Really, you don’t have a problem. You can always stop. See? You did it before. You are in control. You are okay”. Yeah, right. Death, end of story.

Could this explain why Americans at large are still in a slumber regarding 9-11 pre-planning? After all, we Americans are so “into” watching detective movies, reading mystery novels, etc: Wouldn’t one think that we (as a broader American people) could have the Bush/Cheney crimes all figured out by now? Given our cultural proclivity to “play detective“, how is it even possible that Bush and Cheney are still walking free?

I’m sure you know where this is going.

Thius a letter I wrote to someone who sent me

lots of photos and essays but had littered them with language.

Syncronicity with the 'Denial is the Great enabler" article, sorry its is long.

When I looked again at your message I decided not to send it to all these people and here's why.

In my opinion, although I fully agree with your anger, I do not think the use of language like moth*****ers, b****s, Jew Nazis, and so on, is going to help our cause. You have to realize that the Zion**s are very clever, how else would they have silenced the real news in America and to a lesser extent in Europe? How else could they get away with all these dastardly actions, and the world not know about it? How could they get away with banning Norman Finkelstein from Israel for 10 years, a holocaust survivor? And many other manipulations of the news that ordinary folk are not allowed to see?
We have to think and try to be even cleverer than they are. Using such language as you have is an open invitation to call you a racist, anti-Semite and worse, a person filled with irrational hatred and therefore easily dismissed as a nut.
In all of the messages requesting the photographs only one said do not send the photographs I cannot stand any more of them. One has to take into account people's feelings and approach them gently; after all, you are making their life a bit uncomfortable just by exposing them to these photographs. Generally people do not want to know, in the mass, about things like this, you have to go easy on them, be a bit clever in getting under their defences to such things. Propaganda is an art form and the b******s have learnt their lessons well from Goebells and the like.
So we have a Herculean task, against a formidable enemy. Every chance they get they will put you down, ridicule your efforts to bring to the public eye what you are trying to expose of their nefarious deeds.
I am not a socialist or a communist, but the ONLY strength we have is in numbers. Waking up the masses, for whatever reason, the atrocities in Gaza and the West Bank, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia happening now, let alone the things they have done over the past 50 years with their CIA overthrow of various Latin American nations and small countries, all in the name of Corporate Profit, is the task, in my opinion, the objective, to make things known to more and more people.
We have an unusual opportunity to reach many more people in the very near future as the coming depression gives people a taste of what its like to be homeless, hungry, with no money and so on. Millions of people the world over live like that anyway, and they are going to suffer even more with the rising food prices, but the people of Europe and America will have some nasty shocks to their comfortable lives coming to them. What do you propose to do with this anger and frustration, given that you could organize something? Storm the white house and drag Bush out to the lawn and hang him? Wonderful. And then what? Perhaps get all the other duel national Neocons and repeat on the white house lawn? And then what? Chaos brings its own rewards/problems. Just look at what is happening in Iraq, it is mostly a kind of war lord/tribal scenario, just as it was after the Russians were pushed out of Afghanistan, until the Taliban came and restored order with their Sharia Law. What’s so bad about Sharia Law when you take the 'islamofacist' fear mongering out of it? If you obey the law you have nothing to fear, everything is clear and above board, everybody knows the limitations, just like we know the limitations under our more liberal laws here in Europe and America. But what is the difference? Just look at the depravity of the western world with all its laws, and the behaviour of the masses. Following the corruption and immorality in high places, people end up following their own desires, however harmful to themselves and others. If you have, under Sharia law, a highly placed Mullah, do you think that he will follow his own desires or will he uphold to the letter the law in his own life? Generally speaking, he will be clean, because not to be would bring his position to an end and the law would prevail, and it is harsh, in Sharia law. So there is the fear of not obeying the law, without going into promised Heaven and fear of hell. Of course there are always exceptions.
Don't take my criticism of your language to heart, think about how your message can be improved and reach more people in a more gentle way and not so much a 'in your face' way. I understand your anger, Yesterday I listened to a 911 call from the World trade Centre from the 85th floor from a woman who had five others with her, the floor was red hot and burning them, there was tons of smoke and they were all desperate and panicking. I wept and vowed to get that bastard bush, he deserves to hottest place in hell, but he is only the puppet. We have to work against the puppet masters, the Neocons, and the shadow government, the gung-ho bastards in the Pentagon, the international bankers, who are not all Jews. So you see there are many enemies, and they are organized, know one another's agendas, and work for their own piece of it, like the 'ass licking chicken sh*t' Petraous' as Admiral Fallon called him. This is enough I think.
Incidentally the person who did not want to see the photographs had a lot of information about 9/11 from Spain, from University studies of the planes that hit the second tower which I had not heard of before. she indicated that other people need to co-operate with one another in getting this information out to more people, the 9/11 thing is key to what has gone on since, and I agree. But witness how the 9/11 people are ridiculed and called nuts. We have to out think them and not make ourselves easy targets.

I'm tired of the endless moralizing.

Knowledge of crookism is not enough.

You have to think in order to understand a con.

As a professional salesman

Since the analogy of sales entered, and since I have spent most my life selling dreams to people, I have used my experience to "sell" people on the truth of 9/11 by allowing them, as it is in sales, to come to the conclusion.

It's helpful not to come off as someone who knows, but rather someone who is seeking. Often I'll start out with something along the lines, like, did anyone hear anything more about those fire-fighters testimony? Naturally 99% of the time you hear, "what firemen?", which leads into, I caught this interview of a NYC Fire-Chief, where it was mentioned recently released transcripts 118 NYC firemen that were at "ground zero" on 9/11, who testify to bombs and explosions in those buildings. Who never got a chance to talk to the 9/11 Commission.

And no matter where the conversation goes, I always go back to, who would you rather believe? Firemen, who were there and have nothing to lose, or politicians who have everything to gain, and everything to lose?

It doesn't always work, but it traps people into breaking away from believing those that they know lie, against a life-long hero, firemen.

American Expat in Asia
pftAmerican Expat in Asia

Well

Most normal people are good, and like to think everyone is like them.  In order to recognize 9/11 for what it really is, well, thats a painful process.  The world turns upside down. You have to ask yourself, what else have they lied about?  And what might they do next?.  The answer was and is, a lot, and there is more to come.

To many, Evil does not really exist,  at least not in America, and if it does, the religous will say God will deal with it and if it becomes too much they believe they will be raptured away, and so isolate themselves from those who might be Evil by dealing only with those who believe what they believe.  The non-religous, or those secular religous who treat religion mainly as a social activity,  deny the concept of Evil.  People at home are products of society, the poor and underpriveliged, or the greedy may do bad things,  but thats about as far as it will go, and they will be punished by our government they say.   These people are unprotected, since they do not see Evil as an enemy they must defend against.

They have to have an open mind, and be willing to think, and have the time to do so.  Most people are so busy surviving, they do not have the time nor the energy.  So they decide to trust in Fox or CNN.  It's too much for them.  I don't believe it is denial so much as a coping mechanism.

But for the enlightened minority, as the truth evolves, and you realize that although you will never know the absolute truth, it becomes clear that it is a conspiracy of what I call a psychopathic neo-malthusian globalist elite.  The leaders are from rich and power families that have accumulated great wealth over many generations.  They have formed secret societies, and some not so secret, that they use for meeting and planning with each other, and which serves as a recruiting tool.  Those at the bottom levels of these societies know not much more than us, but are ambitous, and if they do good, they get promoted and learn a little more of the truth.  Most are innocents who are victims of the same con,  but they do the work of the psychopaths.

The conspiracy hides behind various tools it creates for this purpose.  The Orwellian babble that we have hammered into our heads to treat conspiracy theorists as nuts.  How after all is it possible for rich and powerful people who control government and thus law enforcement as well as  MSM possibly get away with a conspiracy?  LOL.  So as you explain the truth to an innocent, you can see the awareness grow as it becomes apparent to them that you are trying to con him with a conspiracy theory.  As his eyes open wide, you see the word  conspiracy forming on his lips,  he then gets a bit red in the face before spitting out "CONSPIRACY THEORY!"  He walks away, showing his contempt and smug in the knowledge that his truth is the real truth, since it is free of conspiracy.  "The ignorance of the ignorant is the malady of the ignorant."

Other tools are anti-semitism (Zi*nism), Racism, Fascism, Islamism, McCarthyism.   Explaining this would take too much space, but the truth of the the 20th century and today hides behind myths and lies.  I see no way that most people will ever accept the truth, or even accept the possibility of a psychopathic elite ruling class, at least not until Lucifers Hammer strikes, when there will be no doubt,  but it will be too late.   As mentioned earlier, these neomalthusians want to eliminate 5 billion or more of us, once they globalize us, we are lunchmeat.

While some of us see the emperor is nude, flaunting a herpes infected serpent that stands tall in it's salute to Lucifer, this is an unpleasant sight, so most look away.  I like to think those who know whats going down exist in larger numbers, but worry that if they point this out,  the other people will not believe them, or they will be punished (a legitimate concern).

The whistleblower wannabes, and there may be many,  likely fear that the MSM will not even report they tooted their whistle, and only the evil psychopaths will hear, and that the normal people would not believe even if they heard.   I can understand their reluctance.

Maybe whistles are being tooted all over the place, how would we know, maybe the internet filters them, and we know MSM silences them, and so the psychopaths eat them, slowly, one by one.

Or maybe these people have sold their souls to the devil, being sold a pack of lies, promises to be one of the elite if they go along with it, with all the personal sex slaves they can eat.  Perhaps they may live out the rest of their days as slaves to the elite.  Anyone complaining they broke their promise to let them be one of the elite go to the ovens.  History repeats, remember the holocaust, only next time it won't be just jews.  Psychopaths rule.

Wow! Thank you!

MR M, your insights are just extremely helpful. Thank you ever so much! THis kind of  practical, insightful and experienced advice is just what I, and we all I believe, have been looking for.

I think we activists all need this kind of insight and support along the road, since we come up against the discrediting mechanism all the time. I think it will be vital for us activists to have *ongoing* support, with tools that are proven to work, on a steady basis.

PFT, here is a comment to your statement below, for which I thank you too:

"The whistleblower wannabes, and there may be many,  likely fear that the MSM will not even report they tooted their whistle, and only the evil psychopaths will hear, and that the normal people would not believe even if they heard.   I can understand their reluctance.

Well, all I can say is that the ACLU"s website is full of such examples. Things that not only aren't publicized by the Press, but even by the activist organizations---except, that is, for the ACLU and Center for Constitutional Rights. Things like...activists, not terrorists, being targeted by the FBI. The Silence of the Scams is such that the gag orders in the Patriot Act assure utmost secrecy----even attorneys are gagged-----therefore nobody, but I mean nobody, gets to hear about all the incidents. All I can say is that you are absolutely right: We will all be lunchmeat in no time flat, given the American tendency to "look the other way" and to deny the truth when they see it.

I close with a reiterated statement: I wish that a) more people would read the contents of the ACLU's website: It's fascinating and very enlightening www.aclu.org b) more people would read the Congressional voting record, or the ACLU's Congressional voting scorecard, also on the website above.

Mr M, your strategy will be very useful to all of us. Thank you ever so much!

Currently I'm a cartoonist and contributing writer for The New Orleans Levee.
Mr MCurrently I'm a cartoonist and contributing writer for The New Orleans Levee.

When you know - you're compelled ...

to make people aware of the truth or you do what you described in your article.

It's a fierce subject to breach, everyone who does faces prospects of losing family and friends over it, it's that touchy. When I first became aware it was natural to blurt out what I found to everyone I knew, needless to say the reaction from many 4 years ago was a slap in the face to just how touchy.

So I started using my methods of selling to ease people in, and like in sales, you aren't going to sell everyone, but the ones you do, do so because they "wanted" to be sold, just like most people want to know what's really going on, what's behind the curtain? Give them a peep and they either pull the curtain back themselves or walk away. The ones that walk away you wouldn't sell anyway.

At times it can be a book about 9/11 I'll lay on a counter, a logo on a hat or T-Shirt that will start a conversation. One way I found is when playing poker, which is a great way to have a circle of strangers who are more or less a captive audience, but most of these methods aren't going to work for shy people.

For those too shy or intimidated writing is the way, basically using same techniques by asking questions as a "lead-in", "Did you read about ...? ", Have you seen this video ...?"

My truck has maybe 16 to 20 bumpers-stickers, plus signs I hang from rear-windows, and it amasses me I'm never pulled over, I guess they figure anyone crazy enough to plaster 9/11 signs all over the place must have all his papers in order, doesn't drink and obey all traffic laws. They'd be right. But just the other day, while getting gas, someone asked me what I thought and turned out his brother just gave him a 9/11 DVD to watch.

At times I'll put my lap-top on a table at a bar and put on one of the 9/11 DVD's and just sit back and watch as people take a look (they always want to know what other people are doing), sometimes they'll sit and watch with me.

The truth is getting out there, but don't look for anyone on M$M to get it out, even KO, every one's darling, refers to "Truthers" as "nut-cases". It's us, just us against a maddening machine and to keep from going mad ourselves, those of us who feel compelled can't let-up no matter the odds. We become pests to many and teachers to others, and one by one we do what we can. When I first started there were a lot less people willing to listen than there are now, so we are having an effect. Will this save us or protect us from the next "false flag" attack? Who knows? But just sitting back and letting them do it isn't going to stop them. Being afraid to act isn't going to either.

"In a time of deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." - Orwell

COMMENT

What, dear reader, have you found to be effective when coming up against this wall of denial? What tools can you tip us off to in dealing with such denial? Please post below. I believe this information can only be absolutely pivotal to our success as activists. Thank you for your help!

Only the truth can penetrate the walls of denial but only love and compassion can loosen the foundation of those walls . Use Bush as an example ~ his denial is based on a deep childhood fear of failure and inadequacy whereas he will do anything, including starting wars, to avoid this reality . As a psychotherist, this is why truth interventions often work particularly when they involve people who the Denier knows, loves and trusts.

The threat of the loss of love and respect from those who we love and respect is quite often quite capable of cracking the the most formidable walls of denial.

There is no truly effective healing without love and compassion.
