Are Bush and Cheney guilty of treason?

US Constitution Article 3 Section 3. Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

On Sept 20th, 2001, George W. Bush announced a "war on terror". "Our war on terror begins with al Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated." http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2001/09/20010920-8.html

If we are engaged in a war on terrorist groups, then anyone who gives aid and comfort to terrorist groups is an enemy.

One major aim of terrorist groups is to get hold of weapons of mass destruction, in order to better terrorize a target population, such as the people of the US.

At the time Bush gave his speech, Valerie Plame was an undercover CIA agent, running an international ring of CIA assets, whose job was tracking WMD's through world black markets and preventing them from falling into the hands of terrorists. Two years later, her undercover identity was leaked to the press. Her outing did serious and lasting damage.

Several intelligence officials described the damage in terms of how long it would take for the agency to recover. According to their own assessment, the CIA would be impaired for up to "ten years" in its capacity to adequately monitor nuclear proliferation on the level of efficiency and accuracy it had prior to the White House leak of Plame Wilson's identity.

In other words, the outing of Valerie Plame made it much easier for "every terrorist group of global reach" to acquire WMD's.

Thus, the outing of Valerie Plame gave aid and comfort to terrorist groups.

In other words, whoever "leaked" her undercover CIA identity to the press gave aid and comfort to terrorist groups, by making it easier for them to acquire WMD's.

OUTING VALERIE PLAME WAS AN ACT OF TREASON.

"Scooter" Libby took the fall for the administration on the Plame outing, after being convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice by Patrick Fitzgerald's grand jury. Bush suspended his sentence, so he did no jail time.

Now Scott McClelland, who was presidential spokesman at the time, tells us that both Bush and Cheney were directly involved into misleading him, Scott McClelland, into telling the press that no one in the White House did the outing of Plame.

In other words, Bush and Cheney are co-conspirators in the outing of Plame, or at least in the coverup and obstruction of justice. They have both committed treason.

If Congress does not impeach them immediately, then the whole Congress is guilty of treason.

When the 2008 election comes around, We the People should turn out of office any Representative who has not cosponsored HR 333/799- to impeach Cheney.

Commentary regarding your article

Hello Carol

Thank you for this very good article pointing out a terribly important fact for us all to understand. And which, no doubt, is good reason to impeach.

 A) Rep. Henry Waxman, D-CA points out on Talking Points memo, in an open letter to Bush and the public, that the U.S. Constitution prohibits the Vice President of the USA from declassifying information. Only the President has that power, with one stipulation that it is not done to save face or for personal gain. In Bush and Cheney's cases alike, writes Waxman, the leaking of Valerie Plame's name "raises a few concerns" and GWB and RC both are on very shaky ground, legally/Constitutionally.

B) Why is the Press not mentioning to us all that Valerie Plame's life was endangered by the leak? In fact Ambassador Wilson said on Catie Kuric's TV show that "my family was endangered". Seems to me that only gang leaders seek revenge by endangering lives.

C) Having previously served on a local ACLU Chapter Board, and having read extensively about civil liberties crack-downs and post-911 legislation (we are no longer living in the same America as prior to 9-11),  I have a couple of things to say about this statement:

"If we are engaged in a war on terrorist groups, then anyone who gives aid and comfort to terrorist groups is an enemy. "

That is true.

But there also is a problem with it, given the Patriot Act and Military Commissions Act: Lacking Habeas Corpus (Military Commissions Act/torture bill), and warrantless arrests without probable cause/loose definition of terrorism drafted to include peace and religious groups in its sweep (Patriot Act), and no access to legal counsel for foreigners (Patriot Act), it is simply way too easy for ANYBODY to be DUBBED a "terrorist". And that is in fact exactly what is going on:

Greenpeace, the Quaker anti-war group American Friends Service Committee, Common Cause, University of California at Berkeley students against the Iraq War, many individuals et al have been OFFICIALLY dubbed "terrorist" organizations/individuals. By that definition, I myself could also be considered a treasonous terrorist because heaven forbid, I gave a contribution to the "Terrorist" American Friends Service Committee. Obviously, I gave these forgiveness and peace-oriented "terrorists" aid and comfort, true?

Further, former FBI agent Mike German who now is counsel to the ACLU, sent an email to ACLU members stating that since 9-11, only ONE terrorist has been caught as the result of the National Security Letters in the Patriot Act. And the ACLU's movie "Stop the Abuse of Power" states that more than 850 Guantanamo detainees are proven innocent, while the Red Cross estimates that 70% of them are. So much for who is a "terrorist" (and deserving of torture, as misconceived by some cross-sectors of the general populace).

D) "One major aim of terrorist groups is to get hold of weapons of mass destruction, in order to better terrorize a target population, such as the people of the US. "

I am not sure I ever "bought" the argument of WMD's as a reasonable excuse to go to war. By golly, the USA possesses more WMD's than probably most nations on earth. Does that mean that other nations should come running to attack us? Let's hope not!

I also have read studies that in fact, terrorists lack the funding to acquire and to set off WMD's of significant enough power to wreak harm on entire areas. They may be able to get WMD's powerful enough to bomb a train station, but not to wipe out cities full of people. That's the kind of bomb which only governments can afford, to begin with.

BUT I AM NOT AN EXPERT IN THIS AREA SO I HAVE TO QUALIFY THAT STATEMENT BY WAY OF SAYING THAT THIS STATEMENT IS BASED SOLELY ON ARTICLES I HAVE READ. I COULD BE WRONG, BUT IT ALSO SEEMS TO MAKE SENSE TO ME.

Do you, or do any readers here, have more information about this?

Thank you very much for this important work, Carol. Again it's terribly important to step forward with good reasons to impeach. And there is no doubt that the Plame case is a case of treason: You are right!

And, if we ever want to have OUR America back, for which we pay with our tax dollars (never should any nation have to pay to fund their own abuse), then we also have to do a "clean sweep" of Congress. You are absolutely right, Carol! I thank and applaud you for your heroic efforts on all of our behalves. Not because we are Democrats, not because we are Republicans, Independent or Green, but because we are Americans. Period. Thank you ever so much!
