Impeachment of Bush and Cheney is essential

Tell A Friend

For the survival of our constitutional republic impeachment of Bush and Cheney is absolutely essential, but the Democratic leadership in Congress has made the judgement that: "impeachment is off the table." The calculation seems to be based on two points:

1) After the Republicans’ shameful Clinton impeachment fiasco the American people don’t have the stomach to go through the process again, and

2) Bad as the President and Vice President are, we can tolerate them because they’ll be gone in 18 months.

With regard to the first point: Clinton’s impeachment was a fraudulent Republican political act designed to embarrass him (and by extension, all Democrats) about a purely personal matter having no bearing on the functioning or survival of our constitutional republic (i.e. not a "high crime or misdemeanor").

By contrast, impeachments of Bush and Cheney will be based on many GENUINE high crimes and misdemeanors that threaten our survival as a free people with inalienable rights:

1) lying to the American people, Congress and the UN to gain support for their misbegotten war against Iraq,

2) violating international laws by waging a war of aggression against Iraq,

3) illegally spying on American citizens without legitimate court warrants,

4) authorizing and encouraging "rendition" and torture of those he and he alone decides are enemies or "terrorists",

5) holding prisoners indefinitely without charge and denying them the right of habeas corpus guaranteed in Article 1 of the Constitution and recognized in Common Law since the Magna Carta,

6) issuing over 700 signing statements to avoid the constitutional requirement for him to faithfully execute the laws passed by Congress,

7) using these signing statements to claim unitary executive authority - that he is not bound by the laws that apply to everyone else,

8) encouraging subordinates (e.g. Karl Rove and Alberto Gonzales) to violate the Hatch Act which forbids using government facilities for purely political purposes.

Until now the corporate news media has been loath to expose Bush and Cheney as the despots we know them to be from investigative reporters like Seymour Hersh and Greg Palast, scholars like Chalmers Johnson and countless others. Even Bush’s media sycophants, Fox News, will not be able to avoid at least some coverage of public impeachment hearings where this administration’s crimes will be exposed for all to see. When the people come to understand the full extent to which the Bush/Cheney criminal enterprise has deceived them there will be a groundswell for their removal from office.

Now with respect to the second point it is imperative that Bush and Cheney not be allowed to "run out the clock", but that they be removed immediately because: a) they are preparing for an attack on Iran, probably using nuclear weapons , and b) they have arrogated such extraordinary powers to themselves that it is entirely conceivable (indeed in the opinion of many, highly likely) that they will trump-up an excuse to "justify" a declaration of martial law, render Congress and the Courts powerless, and postpone future elections for the duration of the "emergency" thereby effectively anointing themselves as absolute rulers for life answerable to no one. Under these conditions the people would have no recourse, but to resort to violent revolution to reclaim the country from the despots.

For the above reasons and others too numerous to go into in this short note Bush and Cheney must be removed from office now. Since assassination is the only thing that is truly off the table, the only action available to rescue our democracy is the use of the impeachment process.

Preaching to the choir

I have been saying this now for over three years...to any who will listen. And let me tell you, here in North Dakota, it's been SLOW going...I can't even get most people to agree that the war in Iraq in wrong on many levels, many don't even know of our use of WMD (depleted Uranium) on the order of thousands of tons or the horrible cancers and birth defects it is causing, and will continue to cause, for who knows how many centuries in that region of the world. It's so bad here at work, no one talks during a shift, for fear of the conversation turning political...at least when I'm around. Everyone acts like an abused child, just trying to forget the horrors they know are out there being commited on Muslims and of course they all know deep in their hearts that someday thEse horrors could be visited on Americans, but as long as Faux News isn't worried, neither are they. TURN OFF THE MAINSTREAM NEWS AND 'REALITY' SHOWS, AND START EDUCATING YOURSELVES VIA THE NET MEDIA OUTLETS LIKE THIS ONE, FOR GOD'S (AND YOUR) SAKE!!!!

Impeachment is an imperative

They are clearly guilty of at least failure to uphold the oath of office, and all that you have listed, and then some. However, it is imperative that we not only impeach them, but also try them for humanitarian crimes. And being a country that respects laws, if they are guilty , they should be punished based on the law. If we don't do this, then we are also complicit, and rest of the world will think that Americans don't care about Freedom and Justice.

He is a former pro-American that wishes to be pro-American again and thinks the impeachment and repudiation of President George W Bush for the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 is necessary to reestablish trust in American signatures on international treaties and confidence in the global rule of law.

Getting impeachment started and

nailing the abominable notion that impeachment can ever be off the table when a President breaks his oath of office is far more important to me as a foreigner than that George W Bush be actually punished.

For me as a foreigner, the RE-election of Bush AFTER the illegal invasion of Iraq, and after no weapons of mass destruction were found, puts Americans in the collective aggregate in default of their word of honour on treaties and to the rule of law with respect to the rest of us.

Americans in the aggregate, (not individually I well know that there are many Americans that are amongst the very best of contemporary humanity, and many decent Americans are working hard on blogs and forums like this) but its the majority whose values collectively elect its Presidents and make a country and make its foreign policy.  And Americans in the aggregate are apparently lawless even when the laws at issue are the most serious and most solemn laws that previous generations of human beings have been able to establish. Laws aimed as the UN Charter aims to "save succeeding generations from the scourge of war".

The US Constitution and the UN Charter are noble constructions that were hard won by people of the past. But contemporary Americans in the aggregate seem to be willing to let party politics or personal convenience or interest so much influence their own actions or inactions that they will let a President that they could and should impeach remain in office. They are willing to let their Senators and representatives ignore their article 6 duty to "support the constitution".

Impeaching Bush is what Americans can do for the world to make it up to the world and show us that at long last they, contemporary Americans, recognize that laws made to prevent illegal aggressive wars should not be able to be launched.

Assassination is off the table. George W Bush is not Hitler. But George W Bush's Presidency is setting the scene for the rise of an American Hitler and then assassination will be on the table as American Bonhoeffers have to wrestle with their consciences about what to do when the majority of their countrymen are doing nothing in the presence of real evil.

The rule of law MUST be supported by Americans because the rest of the world will see that it is not if it is not.  Terrorists recruiters can point at the continuance of the President Bush as evidence of the decadence of the US people. Former allies are placed in the position of almost wishing for more American suffering to get Americans back to respect for the rule of law.

If Americans can find it within themselves to be as good as their professed values and to impeach Bush because he broke his oath of office to defend the constutition and laws of the US (which include treaties - the breach was the invasion of Iraq) then the whole world will see that too.

The best thing to remove the wind from the sails of those who have anti-American feeling ranging from wanting to kill Americans in jihadi acts to wanting to express distain for them is to show that Americans are truly a lawful honorable people by impeaching (giving a fair trial to) the President that declared the absurd (unwinnable) war on (a word) terror.

Impeaching Bush -starting with Cheney if necessary, will get America its allies back and couldn't possible fail but to be noticed even by those Iraqis and others whom Bush and Cheney may have inspired to terrorism precisely because those people have no recourse to a rule of law.

Impeachment is important because globally assassination and war are never off the table unless they are displaced by pervasive confidence in the rule of law applying to all.

Impeachment

We all know Bush/Cheney and the entire adminstration are deserving of Impeachment.  But unfortunately, the Dems are like bells without their clappers, totally useless.  They talk tough but don't follow through. As a result this administration just goes about doing whatever the hell it  wants to, thumbing their collective noses  at the Judiciary...and Constitution.

Is it no wonder the world  has lost all  respect for the country that SAYS it's the finest democracy on the planet?  They ALL watched Clinton being impeached for lying about sexual encounters, and laughed their asses off at how our Constitution was used.

NOW they are watching the Dems cower to Bush. His acts are beyond Impeachment, yet they have let him get away with EVERYTHING our country disavows.

I'm tired of sending e-mails and faxes to Congress. They DON'T listen to the people, they only pay attention to what they will do for the NEXT election.

If the Judiciary does not follow  thru with contempt charges on Friday the 29th....VOTE  THEM ALL OUT  IN THEIR NEXT RE-ELECTION.

Organize, organize, organize

Mr. Regl is clearly enraged and fed up with Bush policies.

His list particulars notwithstanding, Bush implemented his policies in plain sight, through legal channels and with support of Congress and one of major political parties.

Impeachment is just not appropriate.

To Mr. Regl and anyone else advocating impeachment, I make the same recomendations.

If your Congressional Representatives oppose the war, back them up.

If they favor it, primary them and vote the scoundrels out.

We cannot continue to let other people be the of by and for.

We are the people and we need to be the change we are seeking.

Since Impeachment won't work, what's left ?

How long have we all been waiting to hear and see the Impeachment process begin? Like everything else the Bushit administration has pulled, [ a list too long to post ] and with all the power they keep giving themselves, and all the charges they just keep ignoring and exempting themselves from, what's left?

I'm staying on top of the Article V Convention, which I don't fully undestand. I just read where there is a march of people that left Chicago June, 21st heading to Washington to march around the White House and demand the removal of above said criminals on September 11th, and I imagine that will only lead to the sudden vacation of above said criminals, or the deployment of National Guard troops to control the protestors. I have heard, but not found any articles on how 5 states of the Union are processing the paper work to secceed from the Union. And yesterday watched a commentary on tv where Maryland is planning to reclaim the land which our D.C. communitty resides and return it to the state.

YET I SEE THE ABOVE SAID CRIMINALS ARE STILL THUMBING THEIR NOSES AT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, OUR CONSTITUTION AND IT'S LAWS !!! SO WHAT'S LEFT ?!

If my research on the Article V Convention is correct, [and someone correct me if I'm wrong] but if Congress fails to observe this meeting, then it is up to the AMERICAN PEOPLE to remove above said criminals by force if neccessary.

Please, no one take this wrong, but I imagine we are looking at the physical, forceful, removal of the above mentioned criminals. If we could find out, I doubt if any of our forefathers wanted to leave their farms and business' to have to go defend our country from the British during the Revolutionary War. But did they have a choice ? What were they left with to do ?

I really hope and pray that the physical, forceful, removal of these bandits from OUR government, can be averted and handled peacefully, with maybe the Article V Convention or the secceeding of the states. A peaceful protest march, anything peaceful and non-violent.

But I keep looking back on previous proceedings to do such, only to keep seeing a big Neo-Conservative nose thumbed at US, and wimpy Democrats telling US they WILL do something... only to see them with their tails tucked between their legs, and saying "Whatever you want King George II."

So what is left ?
