The Libby Verdict - Nothing is Sacred to the Hypocritical Republican Right

by Anthony Wade     Page 1 of 1 page(s)

Tell A Friend

March 7, 2007

He is GUILTY. The man they like to call “Scooter” has been found guilty as charged on four counts by a jury of his peers. Justice for him has come but for Valerie Plame and Joseph Wilson it remains elusive. Just mere hours after justice was delivered upon I Lewis Libby, the republican right was bellowing about pardons and anything to distract America from the inescapable fact that he is GUILTY.

What is this man guilty of? Obstruction of justice and perjury. You remember perjury don’t you? Perjury is the crime that the republican right whined abut for two years as they were impeaching Bill Clinton. Of course in Clinton’s case, he had lied under oath about a person sexual indiscretion, not about treasonous activities. Treason? You got it. You see this investigation was about the felonious outing of a CIA covert operative as political payback. It doesn’t get any more treasonous than that… wait, I forgot that the agent’s job at the time was to protect this country from the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. I stand corrected, it CAN be more treasonous than that and it certainly was.

In fact, George Bush Senior perhaps said it best, “I have nothing but contempt and anger for those who betray the trust by exposing the name of our sources. They are in my view, the most insidious of traitors.” Amidst the crocodile tears and calls for pardons, let us not lose sight of what this is really about. Prosecutor Fitzgerald was investigating who leaked the covert identity of Valerie Plame. The leak was done to discredit her husband Joseph Wilson, who has an unimpeachable record of bipartisan public service. Wilson was dispatched at the behest of the Office of the Vice President, despite the lies being spread by the right, to investigate the claim that Saddam Hussein had tried to purchase yellowcake from the country of Niger. The documents in question were poor forgeries and Wilson knew that. The name on the documents of the Mines Official was someone who hadn’t been in office for years. Wilson went anyway and came back assuring everyone that there was no validity to the story. Unfortunately for him, our government wanted the story to be true to justify the war. The story made it into the State of the Union address and Wilson put two and two together. After trying to get them to come clean about the error, he published an op-ed in the NY Times where he told the truth to the American people. His reward for his decades of public service? A vicious smear campaign was launched against him by the White House, including the willful outing of his wife, Valerie Plame, who was a covert CIA operative, despite the lies being spread by the right.

What does all of this mean? It means that the White House sold this country into war, resulting in the deaths of over 3,000 soldiers, on lies that they knew were lies. This was not a case of bad intelligence; it was a case of selective intelligence they knew was false. When Wilson had the temerity to set the record straight, someone betrayed this country by outing his wife, pure and simple. The republicans will whine that Fitzgerald never actually indicted anyone for the outing of Valerie Plame and they are correct. What they refuse to acknowledge is that the reason Fitzgerald could not indict anyone is because Lewis Libby lied to him under oath and obstructed justice. That is what this case is about. That is why perjury is a serious offense.

But the right-wing echo chamber is having none of it. The same people, who bemoaned the lies of Bill Clinton, now seem to think it is not a serious matter. They have portrayed Libby as a loyal servant. HE LIED UNDER OATH AND OBSTRUCTED JUSTICE. They have tried to claim the jury was “confused”, - shut up. They said clearly that they felt Libby was the fall guy, but that he clearly was a LIAR. George W. Bush, who is supposed to serve the interests of the citizenry of this country, said in response to this verdict that he was “sorry for Mr. Libby and his family.” Excuse me? Bush feels badly for the convicted felon, not the injured party? He feels badly for the man who obstructed an investigation into treasonous activities but does not have a word of remorse for what people in his administration did to two patriotic citizens? Lewis Libby is not the injured party here, he is the perpetrator. The spinning being done on the right may be dizzying at times but do not lose sight of the fact that Libby was CONVICTED of obstructing justice and perjury in a federal investigation into treason against the United States of America.

Republican spin machines such as the Weekly Standard and the National Review have already called for a pardon, clearly showing that they put party before country and think the rule of law is strangely outdated. Since Libby lied to protect this president and his lies that started a war, Bush should recuse himself from any possibility of a pardon. That of course is highly unlikely based upon the president already expressing his remorse that a jury of his peers has found Libby guilty. The truth obviously does not matter to this administration. Maybe I am too harsh but I generally do not have a lot of sympathy for people who betray their own country. That is what I Lewis Libby did, and was convicted of yesterday. Maybe I just like the idea of seeing how well the name “Scooter” goes over in prison, but this verdict does not sadden me as it does our president.

Let the right wingnuts cry as loudly as they like. Scooter Libby is a convicted felon who put his party before his country. There is nothing they can say to change those facts. They can try and minimize the investigation or spin yarns about how Wilson and Plame are somehow to blame, but in the end, the justice system worked and a jury of his peers has found Lewis Libby guilty as charged. Nothing is sacred anymore to the anti-American spinmeisters of the right wing. So what if a woman whose job was to protect Americans from WMD had her career ruined. So what if that made us more vulnerable because in destroying Plame, the Bushies also destroyed her cover, Brewster-Jennings, who was responsible for preventing WMD proliferation. Only in the mind of the right-wing nut can this not be seen as blatant hypocrisy. Only in their twisted version of America is the person who obstructs justice in a treason case, the victim. See you later Scooter; hope you look good in orange.

mgriffin138 is a LIAR and should be banned

Lie #1.  Libby is guilty of OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE, while Clinton was only guilty of PERJURY -- a major distinction.  Also, the Obstruction of Justice is in regards to an ongoing, real-time investigation into a possible case of TREASON, while Clinton's perjury was in a CIVIL matter many years older.  Only an idiot or a disingenous Rethuglican would consider them even remotely compatible.  Perjury is for SELF protection, while OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE (of which LIBBY was found GUILTY, GUILTY, GUILTY) is designed to prevent a successful investigation of self AND OTHERS!

Lie #2: Plenty of unimpeached evidence in the trial showed that the White House (especially the East Wing) was quite interested in Joe Wilson (and by extension valerie Plame) and in discrediting and "destroying" Joe Wilson for daring to challenge the lies and information manipulation of the White House in ramping up to the Iraq War.

Lie #3: Armitage was a Clinton hold-over.  Total bullshit.  Armitage is a Reagan, Bush 1, Bush 2 boy who was confirmed in 2001 after having been a consultant on GWB's campaign.  No Clinton connection AT ALL, other than he's a signer of the PNAC letter to Clinton.  I.E., he's a NEO-CON!

Lie #4: It can not be said with ANY validity that Wilson outed his wife.  He NEVER told ANYBODY about her work or about Brewster Jennings & Associates.  This was totally the White House that let that out and destroyed an ongoing, multi-national, multi-million dollar, multi-year project to uncover WMD and prevent them from going to terrorists or terrorist-supporting states.  THAT is treason.

With all due respect, mgriffin138 is full of shit.

Charlie,

You sound like the Bush crowd. Mr. Griffin has every right to state his opinion and you have every right to disagree. You are not the censor of Bush's brave new world. What you just wrote is much more dangerous than what he wrote.

A lie is a lie is a lie...

Some lies are important; some aren't.

Only the most dull-witted of husbands knows enough to say NO when his wife asks if the dress she's wearing makes her look fat, even though she looks broader in the beam than the QE II.

If you're a Republican and a Republican lies under oath about anything, it's okay; if you're a Republican and a Democrat lies under oath about anything, it's not okay.

Mr. mgriffin138

I guess you believe two million sperm cells on Monica's dress is of the same value as one and one half million Iraqi refugees, almost a million Iraqi's killed since this terror was let loose on them and about two million severely injured, and only the Lord knows what psychological trauma their people will suffer after this civil war is over. This does not count the three thousand two hundred American soldiers killed with about fifty thousand suffering traumatic wounds. I am not counting the three trillion in debt our country is carrying and being very close to being in bankruptcy, right now.

No, I guess you think lying under oath about a "blow job" or "fellatio" and adultery are as heinous as what the Bush Administration has done. The outing of Valerie PLame or Mrs. Joseph Wilson was part of the "nuclear cloud rising above Los Angeles" lie Cheney loved to tell time and again. The American people would never have permitted an unprovoked attack on a nation without all that system of lies.

This article is center target and you owe the author a heart felt apology.

Here is a good verse in the Bible you can take back to George Bush.

I really cannot say whether or not he is a Christian for that is between him and God. I can say what he is doing and has said are not Christian because we have the New Testament standard by which to test both his word and his actions. What he is doing and what he said is not Christian by any measure of the imagination.

Here is the verse:

Ephesians 4:25,  "Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another." KJV or AV.

If you wish some verses from the Tanakh (Old Testament) try:

Leviticus 19:11, "Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another."

Remember King David wrote Psalm 51 which is his prayer of repentance for lying, committing adultery with Bathsheba, and murdering Uriah the Hittite. Notice what he wrote in Psalm 52 about Doeg the Edomite when Doeg encourage King Saul to murder all the Priest at Nob for sheltering David who was running from King Saul. It sounds like an honest criticism of King George Bush to me.

Psalm 52:3, "Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness."

There are so many verses which apply to a President claiming to be a Christian while doing what George W. Bush has done, but I will close with my strongest which is a reminder to every one of us:

Proverbs 6:16-19,

16. "These six things does the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

17. "A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

18. "A heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

19. "A false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren."

Only By His Grace,                                                                                         Phil

You have got to be kidding me. You honestly believe there is no correlation between Plame and the White House? You must work for Rove. The White House ordered the outing of Valerie Plame, period. Anyone who is not a sycophant for this administration knows at least that much.

As for your comparison, Libby is facing jail time, but do you honestly believe he will see any? Either way, I do not consider the ruination of a presidential legacy for partisan gain a "slap on the wrist."

If you are straight GOP just say so and move on, but do not come in here making silly arguments like the White House had nothing to do with Plame and Armitage is a secret Bush-hater. Save the lies for another website.

Thanks.

Armitage is a red herring

There was a concerted effort on MULTIPLE levels with MULTIPLE participants to out VP and "hurt" Wilson.

You are either disengenous or pathetic to continue to presume that Armitage proves anything.  DO YOU ACTUALLY READ?  DO YOU THINK THAT NOBODY HERE DOES?

Yes, Armitage's leaking was a nice little touch during the trial, but plenty more came out AFTER THAT to show that it was only one isolated incident within a whole CONSPIRACY that Libby obstructed the investigation of.

Oh, I forgot, FOX stopped covering much after that little piece of spin came out.

Give up the facts can't be spun here.  Go away and be happy that Libby will probably not spend a moment in jail due to the massive corruption of this Rethuglican administration.

Mr MCurrently I'm a cartoonist and contributing writer for The New Orleans Levee.

What's happening ...

What's happened.

bush&co. got four things done and are looking to get the fifth.

bush&co ordered the documents to be forged. Who else? Why? Who gains?

Only one entity gains - the ones looking to go to war.

One of the most overlooked aspects of this affair is who ordered the documents to be forged? Follow that chain and watch where it goes.

But no one's even asking.

Next, bush&co got to use the false information when needed and has yet to suffer any penalty for lying us into a war.

Third & forth, Brewster - Jennings, Plame are put out of play, plus a shot is fired across the bow of the press - leaving fifth - Iran.

We stop the fifth, we go back to the first , we get them all!

We don't stop the fifth ... you don't even want to go there ...

Dictatorship

It is obvious that someone has committed treason in the act of outing a CIA agent for political revenge. Any semi-intelligent person could draw this conclusion given the facts. But the present state of afffairs in our country as regards our freedom and Constitution is so dire that it matters little who the guilty inidvidual was. With a few notable exceptions, our entire government are guilty of treason. This includes the Administration, cabinet, and the whole of Congress. Both sides of the aisle. This relatively small event is a manifestation of a much deeper disease that threatens our future as a nation.  We are swatting at gnats while the elephants are running over us.

You labor under a misapprehension, unfortunately

Specifically, you believe those who participate here are dumb, uninformed enough to believe the spin you put upon history and the evidence disclosed in that trial.

That your attempts to deceive are met with less than civil response is unfortunate, but lie more with the clumsy efforts you make to be a junior league Karl Rove  than any major failings of those who descend into vulgarity. Any who followed that trial, and there are numerous folks here who did, understand that the evidence points directly to Rove and Cheney.

Heres a clue for you, free of charge; when caught in an obvious lie, as the one you attempted to perpetrate about Richard Armitage and his supposed links to Clinton, it is time to return to freerepublic.com and brag , untruthfully, about how you 'put one over on those dumb librals....oh boy you betcha.

The Need for Cheney's Resignation

TO: Hon. James Webb
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510

FROM: Larry W. Bryant
3518 Martha Custis Drive
Alexandria, VA 22302

DATE: March 7, 2007

The recent conviction of Vice Pres. Cheney's former chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, on federal charges of obstructing justice, committing perjury, and making false statements to F.B.I. investigators presents only half of the justice equation in this case. The other half of this continuing Enron-ization of American governance points to the inescapable conclusion that Cheney knew -- or should have known -- all relevant details about certain White House employees' conspiracy to retaliate against policy critic Joseph Wilson and wife Valerie Plame. Cheney's unclean hands in this matter mustn't be allowed to soil another official U. S. policy, plan, resource, or action.

Accordingly, I hereby ask that you, on behalf of all your constituents, immediately send a letter to Richard B. Cheney, demanding his summary resignation from office. In so doing, you will have helped restore some of the public's confidence in the integrity and reliability of our government's executive branch. On the other hand, if you choose to ignore this opportunity to play a direct role in our achieving full accountability for "Plame-gate," then how should history judge your tenure in the Senate?

Please promptly send me a copy of the requested demand letter. By snail-mail, I'm sending to you a signed printout of this e-formatted letter.

Next: Week: The Plame Hearing

Will it not be nice to listen to that beautiful lady testify next week before a Congressional Hearing?

It will be interesting to see whether the Republicans will show up. What are they going to do? Agree with her that Cheney has committed a felony? Hardly. Castigate her in front of a Democrat controlled majority? Hardly.

This will be more fun than eating buggers when I was a kid. Of course, I was a Republican back then and didn't know better until my Granny spanked my buttocks and told me about John L. Lewis.
